Poll question: Do you know Clark was never a Republican, but Nixon was a Democrat?
Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 10:36 PM by Clarkie1
First the CLark facts:

Clark was never a member of the Republican party.

Clark voted for Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Gore, and Kerry (in addition to actively campaigning for Kerry).

In 2003, Clark joins a political party for the first time and chooses the Democratic Party, changing his status from "independent" to Democrat.

Second, the Reagan facts:

1950 Reagan campaigns in support of California Democrat Helen Gahagan Douglas in her race against Richard Nixon for U.S. Senate.

Reagan leads a movement of Democrats for Eisenhower during both of Eisenhower's presidential campaigns, in 1952 and 1956.

1959 During his last term as president of the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan fights for, and achieves, better benefits and working conditions for actors.

1960 As a "Democrat for Nixon," Reagan champions Nixon’s candidacy for president, delivering more than 200 speeches in his support.

1962 Reagan switches his political affiliation to the Republican party.

Feel free to comment on any of these facts. The purpose of this poll is acertain how many Du'ers know that Reagan used to be a democrat, and that Clark was never a member of the Republican party.

2. From FACTCHECK, fyi
There’s no dispute about Clark ’s voter registration: he was an independent. This by itself means little, however, as nearly 96% of all Arkansas voters express no party preference when registering. Party preference is “optional” on Arkansas ’ voter registration form, and only 2.6% of the state’s residents were registered as Democrats at the end of 2001, according to the most recent statistics published by the Arkansas Secretary of State. Only 1.4% registered as Republicans.

All Clark was doing was what the vast majority in his state did. Doesn't mean a thing, one way or the other.

The issue paper also points out that any career officer with any hope of flag or general rank goes the "independent" route. It is a grave mistake, or used to be, anyway, for any officer to be too closely associated with a particular political party.

My take is that he was a Republican in everything but name until he wised up and realized those fuckers were crazy. Reagan was a Democrat until he got rich, and maybe his mind started to go.

As for Nixon, his mother was a Quaker, if he was raised right by her, he should have started out as a Democrat. Unfortunately, he learned the "power corrupts" lessons early, the evil fool. Pity his momma didn't smack the shit out of him every now and again, he could have used it, and though I don't advocate whaling on kids, he probably could have benefitted from the odd smack as an avaricious adult.
