Dr Dean's Mississippi Visit - A Synopsis
Gov Dean was in MS last night on his trip to visit red states. A few quotes:

We are not going to concede the South.

The South will rise again and when it does it will have a "D" after its name.

Jesus said it was easier for a camel to pass though the eye of a needle then for a rich man to get into heaven. I did not notice that in the Republican platform. We ought not have money changers in the temple. I did not notice that in the Republican platform. You should love thy neighbor. I didn't notice that in the republican platform. The crowd cheered.

A resident of Biloxi said - "The Democratic Party is coming back in a big way. We're tired of being picked on. We're moral people. We're Christians. We're moral people too, we just happen to believe that everybody has rights."

1. Good for Dean. Even though I'm a Neo-Pagan, I do support many of Jesus
teachings about social and financial morality.

2. Wonder if Dean suggested any of this to Kerry during the Campaign?
I have no way of knowing. If he did, and the Dems ignored him, shame of them!

Maybe he just formed this plan of attack and if so, it's a GREAT IDEA!!!!

Keep it up Howard!!!!!

3. thats why the Pug's feared Dean
more than any other candidate. And why the campaigned harder to derail his campaign before it ever got off the ground. His downfall was that he wasn't nationally known prior to his nomination. So it was easier for the RNC to smear his image since they had a nearly clean slate with which to start from. Wont be the case again in '08 if he runs again. He can do alot to build his image and reputation during the next 4 years as Chairperson to the DNC.

5. Dean said he wouldn't run if he decided to take the Chairmanship.
I believe him. I think he would have made a Great President, but I doubt he'll do it again. It was pretty obvious that Judy didn't really want anything to do with leaving her practice and moving to Washington, and that's a problem for any candidate.

I actually think he will be more beneficial to the Dems as Chair.

4. From the DNC blog: Pizza for the overflow crowd...nice idea.
It is good to see Laura Gross have a post at the DNC blog. This was enjoyable to read. I am proud of the MS Democrats. And I like the new nature of the blog.

"Collard greens, fried okra, and Howard Dean
The Red, White, and Blue Tour continues — in Mississippi — with another sold out event!

I arrived in Jackson a few hours before Gov. Dean and his trusty advisor, Matt Nugen. Along with answering emails, talking to reporters on the phone, and checking in with the DNC staff back in DC, I was able to sneak in some good southern food — fried pork chops and collard greens — deelish!" (Ummm. Laura, this Southerner agrees.)

"About two hours later, Gov. Dean arrived — he did some local TV and radio interviews, then he attended a private reception that was supposed to be closed to the press (but, of course the press snuck in). Then, he was off to the big event — there were tables set for 800, but I think 900 showed up — it was truly standing room only.

The State Party ordered pizza for the people that didn't end up sitting at a table and getting a meal. There were former governors, the speaker of the Mississippi House (yes, the speaker is a Democrat) and plenty of other elected officials —there are Democrats in Mississippi!"

6. What? No catfish?
Fly due north from Jackson for about 150 miles and all you see are catfish ponds. Belzoni bills itself as the Catfish Capital of the World.

7. I once visited Belzoni, years ago.
Long story, but fond memories of sitting on porches and being taught how to get black-eyed peas and okra ready to cook. I never got the knack.

It was several days of the best food I ever ate. They cured their own bacon, made their own jelly, homemade biscuits every meal.

Long time ago, happy and sad memories.

JACKSON - Seated with four former Mississippi governors and looking at a crowd that included a House speaker and attorney general, new Democratic National Party Chairman Howard Dean said his party in Mississippi is not in decline. "We're just taking a deep breath before we control the whole thing again."

"We are not going to concede the South," Dean said to a crowd of about 1,000 of the party faithful from across the state gathered here on Tuesday night. "The South will rise again, and when it does, it will have a D after its name."

"Democrats need to preach core values like strong schools and health care to recapture the South, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Tuesday night in Jackson."

http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/politics/11025163.htm
Speaking at the $75-a-plate Mississippi Democratic Party dinner, Dean criticized the national debt and said: "You cannot trust Republicans with your taxpayer dollars."

He prayed for American troops, saying even those who had criticized the war in Iraq should support soldiers and their families. He also said the Democratic Party should reach out to evangelical Christians and the party has room for people with divergent views on abortion.

"I want to reach out to people who are worried about values," Dean said. "We are going to embrace pro-life Democrats because pro-life Democrats care about kids after they're born, not just before they're born."

Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr., a Democrat who's seeking re-election, gave Dean a key to the capital city and told him: "You're already upsetting Republicans here in Mississippi. Keep up the good work."

10. This is why ...
... I admire Dean so much. The things he's saying are obvious, yet we never hear them from anyone else. Why is that? What are most of our politicians so afraid of?

14. Don't concede an inch
I like Dean's willingness and ability to march right into the alleged lions' den and beard the Republicans where they like to imagine they're strongest.

It's thankless work, it's hard work, but it absolutely has to be done. Kerry and Gore both wrote off large sections of the country in the last two elections, and while I appreciate the finer points of winning where you can, and focusing your efforts in swing states, I don't think it would have killed either campaign to schedule a stop or two in places like Mississippi or Nebraska or Wyoming.

And it surely would have helped the Democratic cause. People like to know that you're thinking about them, even if you're not in 100% agreement.

19. There are Progressive Evangelicals and Progressive Christians
While I'm not interested in their religion, not all Evangelicals are hatemongers, like Falwell.

20. No , just telling the truth
It isn't the republicans that believe in protecting the poor , the children and the peacemakers.

These are values consistent with the teachings of Jesus.

Ergo, we should be reaching out to evangelicals to remind them where we stand.

22. He is standing up for the values the GOP stole from us.
He has stated publicly that there will be a religious outreach, and as a recovering Southern Baptist I do so appreciate this.

We are a party made up of good people, and they took that away from us to use for their evil agenda of hate and prejudice.
