1. I'm against anyone being randomly tested.
I believe it's an invasion of privacy.

3. I agree in principal
but when thousands of people are dying needlessly, I think it might be good to know if our President is not under the influence of mind altering substances (and I'm not referring to Neo-cons)

5. Indeed but if they test flight attendants and bus drivers.....
I would say the job of President should be considered equally "safety sensitive".

6. I agree
except that it is inequally applied.
So while it is the dominant paradigm that
we will substitute liberty for safety,
all must suffer equally.

This is like the Conyers Draft Bill.
The only way to reduce the chance that
your son or daughter will be drafted
is to make damn sure their kids are on the list.

7. When your decisions literally affect the lives of millions...
You better fucking believe it!

However, if you flip burgers at McDonald's -- it is an invasion of privacy.

8. until these tests are declared unconstitutional (as I think they should)
then yes.

Logically, if you're going to have mandatory testing for professions like truck drivers and airline pilots, I don't see how you can exempt THE GUY WITH HIS FINGER ON THE BUTTON.

12. Exactly!
If we are going to have any drug screening and drug tests at all, we should have the guys at the top go through it as well- they are the ones with the power to destroy.

9. I voted yes, but...
if there's any reason to think he might not pass, they'd just rig the stupid thing anyway.

I remember back in '98, a company I was working for instituted a drug testing policy, everyone in the company was tested...except the General Manager. Pissed me off to no end.

Of course, urinalysis will pick up pot, and that's about it. Everything else is out of your system lickety-split...that's why I'm against urinalysis.

11. As an airline pilot, I was randomly tested for drugs and alcohol.
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 06:39 PM by DemoTex
I had the right to refuse to submit to drug testing. But then my pilot license - which was granted as a privilege (not a right) by the US Government (FAA) - would be revoked. The FAA sets the conditions of issuance of pilot licenses and the conditions by which you may keep that privilege (so hard earned). Some of those conditions have to do with issues of the safety of the traveling public (check rides, line checks, medical examinations every six months, and drug/alcohol testing).

Workers in nuclear facilities are also subject to random drug/alcohol testing. Basically for the same reasons as are airline pilots and other transportation workers: the overwhelming interests of public safety.

I certainly think the individual with the power and capability to launch nuclear weapons should be subject to random drug testing and periodic mental health screenings. I cannot take Bu$h's word that he is clean and sober. Besides being a notorious liar, his behavior often leads one to believe that he has indeed "fallen off the wagon" (assuming he was ever really on it).
