RNC Publishes Fabricated Dean Quote

Even if you don't worship the ground Howard Dean walks on, you should be disgruntled by this.

On CNN's "Inside Politics," Robert Novak made up a quote by Dean by misreading something he said at Cornell.

Here was what Dean said, according to the Cornell Daily Sun.

Dean pointed out that, while he would not endorse this, if Social Security were left alone for 30 years, its benefits would be reduced to 80 percent of what it is now. He acknowledged that while there were indeed problems with the program, turning to Wall Street was not the answer.

Notice the math here. If you reduce something to "80 percent of what it is now," you are reducing it by 20 percent. You reduce $10,000 to $8,000. Why am I explaining simple math?

On CNN, here is what Robert Novak said.

"hey've got to really get Howard under control. He spoke at Cornell University last week, and the only paper that covered this was "The Cornell Daily" student paper, and he said, yes, Social Security has a big problem. Over the years it's going to lose about 80 percent of the benefits. That, Judy, is not the Democratic line. The Democratic line is there is no problem."

Note Novak's math. If something is "going to lose about 80 percent," there will only be 20% left. $10,000 becomes $2,000.

3. Looks like Judy Woodruff was left holding the bag and apologized
for Novak. It's a dirty job, but I guess someone has to do it.

4. Here is what I posted earlier on this in GD. It is outrageous.
(It dropped quickly and it shouldn't have.)

What the heck kind of country is this that the RNC puts lies on their front page after they have been debunked.
Novak misquoted Howard Dean for the 2nd time in two days. RNC uses his words today.
This is the 2nd write-up about this at Media Matters.

Here is the FIRST correction of Novak by Media Matters.

RNC website today misquotes Howard Dean, using words of Bob Novak. Media Matters has already debunked this.

SNIP..."I think that privatizing Social Security has much more to do with the enormous amount of money that corporate Wall Street poured into the President of the United States's campaign than senior citizens," Dean said. " was a response toward abject poverty...it is not meant as a retirement program...it was meant as a social safety net for people who had reached the end of their working careers and did not deserve, after a long lifetime of dignified work, to live in poverty. ... It's not supposed to be a pension."

Dean pointed out that, while he would not endorse this, if Social Security were left alone for 30 years, its benefits would be reduced to 80 percent of what it is now. He acknowledged that while there were indeed problems with the program, turning to Wall Street was not the answer."

6. Also, Matt Drudge claims falsely that Dean
called Republicans "evil" at a recent Kansas fundraiser. I'm sure that claim, false as it is, will soon find its way into official RNC dogma.

8. Here is what Dean said at the houseparty.
"This is a battle between good and evil, and we are the good."

I love it. Shades of Bush and his good and evil stuff.
