Boxer & Clinton - Support the "Count Every Vote" Act!

Support the "Count Every Vote" Act!

Dear Friend,

On February 18th, Senator Hillary Clinton and I introduced the "Count Every Vote Act" -- critical legislation that will bring overdue reform to our election system and restore the faith of all Americans in their most basic, fundamental right.

Every citizen of this country should be guaranteed that their vote matters, that their vote is counted, and that in the voting booth, their vote has as much weight as that of any CEO, any member of Congress, or any President. Our democracy is the centerpiece of who we are as a nation, and we must take action now to ensure that the American people have full confidence in our electoral system.

Today, I ask you to join the fight. Email your Members of Congress as part of my new e-advocacy campaign, and ask them to join Senator Clinton and me in the Senate, and Representative Stephanie Tubbs-Jones in the House, to co-sponsor the "Count Every Vote Act."

I hope all Members of Congress will join together in a bipartisan way to enact this critical legislation. But if the past is any indication, we still have a lot of work to do. That's why reaching out to your elected representatives is so critical -- especially when multiplied by hundreds of thousands of Americans speaking with the same voice.

With your help, we’ll fight for the kind of comprehensive election reform that our nation so desperately needs. Please email your Members of Congress now -- and then invite all of your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues to join our cause!

In Friendship,

Barbara Boxer
U.S. Senator

Send a letter to the following decision maker(s):
Your Congressperson
Your Senators

Below is the sample letter:

Subject: Co-sponsor the Count Every Vote Act!

Dear ,

On February 18th, Senators Barbara Boxer and Hillary Clinton introduced the "Count Every Vote Act" -- critical legislation that will bring overdue reform to our election system and restore the faith of all Americans in their most basic, fundamental right.

I urge you to join with Senators Boxer and Clinton, and with Representative Stephanie Tubbs-Jones in the House, to co-sponsor the "Count Every Vote Act."

This critical legislation will bring about the kind of comprehensive election reform that our nation so desperately needs, restoring the confidence of all Americans in the integrity of federal elections.

Sincerely,

============================================================

Edited to add:

What's At Stake:

Provide voter-verified paper ballots for every vote cast on electronic machines

Set uniform standards for provisional ballots

Ensure equal access to voting machines and election personnel in every community

Designate Election Day as a federal holiday

Reduce wait times for voters at polling places

Make deceptive voter suppression activities a federal crime

Restrict the political activities of state elections officials and voting machine manufacturers

Campaign Expiration Date:
April 29, 2005

2. This is the bill Andy Stephenson opposes, IIRC
He is lobbying for a different bill. He will correct me if I'm wrong.

Does this bill legislate open source software?

5. Yes it does
The paper record is what is used for recounts, equivalent to a ballot. It requires open source software. Last I remember, Andy said he hadn't read the actual text but was going off press releases which were a bit unclear. This bill has paper ballots and open source and that is HUGE. It also has requirements for numbers of voting machines, poll worker training, election day registration, no excuse absentee voting and more. It looks very good.

6. Okay thanks!
I remember him posting a while ago to support the other one, not Hillary's. But if you guys agree this bill is good then that's great to know. Boxer and Tubbs-Jones are my heroes, after all!

7. They look similar
Holt's is in the House so it probably needs support too. Get them both passed, then there can be a committee for a final bill.

13. This may be a different one from Andy's,
but it is good that they are out there none the less. I received an email about it a little while back and signed it.

...and is it just me, or is even Barbara's signature sexy? Eh, I need to go back to bed.

14. Wrote Clinton
on Feb. 19th and sent an e-mail to friends around the same time: Most important thing going in congress right now:

If we can have a truthfully counted vote, we have the first step for returning America to American's, and wresting it from the grips of corporations. I hope. Next stop, the fourth estate.

Tell a friend.
