Newsweek gives big Coverage to Ed Schultz Show...growing like Limbaugh..
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 10:58 AM by KoKo01
Media: Straight Out of Fargo
A Red State radio talker tries to center the Democrats
By Jonathan Darman
Newsweek

Feb. 21 issue - Ed Schultz comes from Bush country and looks like it. At 6 feet 2 and 250 pounds, his idea of the good life is eating wings, fishing for walleye and watching football on TV. He passionately defends his right to own a gun, eat a steak and drive a Suburban. He loves his nation, his wife and his son, who plays golf for Texas Christian. He's the kind of guy the president might grab in a rope line, give a fake jab to the gut and call by his nickname, "Big Eddie," just like a friend.

But Schultz doesn't want to be George W. Bush's buddy. For three hours every day he rails against Bush on his nationally syndicated radio show from Fargo, N.D., calling the administration "government by the rich, for the rich" and Bush's policies an "axis of bankruptcy." The White House is listening. When Bush came to Fargo this month, Schultz's producer was barred from attending the event (the White House blamed local officials). "Is this what the president thinks of us folks in the heartland?" Schultz asked his listeners. "He's afraid!"

To hear some Democrats tell it, the GOP should be afraid. Schultz is coming after them and doing it on their own turf, smack dead in the middle of Red State America. Al Franken and Air America shattered the myth that liberals won't listen to talk radio. But Schultz isn't interested in just preaching to the converted. He wants to do something even more ambitious: save souls behind conservative lines. So far, he's had tremendous success. He's been sitting behind a mike in Fargo for 20 years, but during the past 12 months he's gone national in a big way. Schultz has the fastest growing radio show since Rush Limbaugh's—81 markets and counting. He can be heard inside Republican fortresses like Waco, Texas, and Phoenix, Ariz. His syndicator, Jones Radio Networks, says he'll be on the air in 150 to 200 markets by the end of this year. (Jones also carries "NEWSWEEK On Air.")

Schultz's secret is to borrow liberally from the Limbaugh playbook of exaggeration and simplification. When Democrats fretted that Bush was secretly plotting against Iran, Schultz pounded away at the White House, breathlessly telling listeners, "This is the kind of stuff that happened back in the 1930s in Germany."

I wish he would just stick to the truth. It is dramatic enough.

news exagerration.

Schultz is a pro who knows how to reach an audience.

He's informed and sees bigger glimps of the whole than lots of others.

He reminds me a little bit of Rush but for the democratic side. Nice to hear someone is getting out there. And AAR is also getting out on more stations. So this is good news to hear.

it's just that Newsweek doesn't believe it, so it's hyperbole to them.

Or they pretend not to believe it, anyway.

of Germany in the 1930s does not sound like exageration to me. Hitler & his propaganda was studied by the neocons apparently. And some political operatives have the same character issues as Hitler et al.

51. He doesn't make stuff up
He just hits the point he wants to make and hammers it home using simple phrases and the like. He uses factual information, but he presents it in a way that doesn't sound think-tanky. That and unlike Limbaugh, he doesn't eject callers that disagree with them, he debates them and tries to convince them.

7. I end up catching him almost everyday on the way to work and school
I enjoy his show, as do I the rest of what is on 167 on xm (mostly AAR stuff) He talks like a normal person would around where I live (NW Ohio) and tells it how it is, in simpleton terms. Most people understand simpleton terms. Favorite part of the show is when he gets some righties that call up and try to put out a talking point and he just hoses them down.

Wish I could get malloy on xm too :(, that's another radio broadcaster I like listening to.

having lived in the deep south for about 40 years and currently living in VA. I don't care to know much more about "red state culture", because I have had enough of it.
(I actually think that the term is an oxymoron, but that is another story. :) )

I agree with you that people who are unfamilar with it, and want to know more about it could probably gain insight by listening to his show.

16. We need 1hr long BEST OF SHOWS
A goal of the progressive left should be to drive ratings for any media outlet that spread the real truth.

I frankly don't think the impact of the right-wing talkers can be overstated, we are late to the game here so we have to work hard to level the playing field.

I would so love if someone could edit a weeks worth of each of the great Progressive radio personalities, into hour-long commericial free bestofs so that I could burn them to CD and distribute them to get people to check them out.

It would be good to be able to have different CDs with the different styles, you know some people hate Randi Rhodes some people love her, some people prefer Thom Hartman...just to be able to have the CDs available woudl be awesome.

Most of the programs are three hours long and i can't won't fit on a regular audio CD.

come across as an extreme left wing liberal. He does not

But that Mike Malloy character makes me depressed. SO much

at odd ball hours, very late at night, so I seldom have to

62. actually, his ratings aren't real good - for several reasons
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 05:52 AM by wyldwolf
1. His timeslot is at night when many AM stations power down, causing many to lose clear or all reception.

2. Many AAR affiliates don't pick his show up, nor Unfiltered. Why? Could be because many feel he is "too left." Could be because he is too controversial (and always has been.)

You can't really blame his talent because he is very talented, very intelligent, etc. He just might not be saying the things most Democrats want to hear. Just my opinion.

He likes being the voice in the wilderness in the middle
of the night. It's his thing I guess.

When Malloy first came on, KPOJ carried him live (7:00 to
10:00 PST), but people complained because they wanted
The Majority Report earlier (why is beyond me, I don't like
that show) and so they switched them out.

I like Malloy but I agree with him so much it depresses me. I can listen to Schultz because he isn't jokey and doesn't shout at his callers. Plus he has alot of our Senate and House members on. I think it's good that we have a variety. It shows that Democrats run the gamit from Franken to Malloy to Schultz. Unlike the Repugs who can only listen to lying ranters who are "lock step on message" ...we have different shades of Democrats... I think that's postive. We need Schultz as much as we need all the others. The more the merrier :D taking back radio one person at a time.

73. I disagree
I lived in Fargo when he was a big rightie and there ain't no way he'd have changed just for the money. He had to actually have a change of heart. He was a "major league asshole" (to borrow a quote from Bush). He still is kind of a jerk but maybe that's what we need on the left.

42. IMO, Schultz is what AAR SHOULD have become
AAR's heart was in the right place when they put on shows with varying liberal slants, but it is obvious that the shows like Unfiltered (and yes, sorry, Mike Malloy) often get nixed when affiliates sign up.

On some stations, Schultz is on before Randi and Randi is tape delayed.

49. While not perfect, our side needs a Limbaughesque character...
to counter Rush himself.

50. Ed sounds like Rush.
I've only heard him a few times. That was my first impression of him.

52. Not bad for someone who turned democrat 5 years ago.
But eh, "redders" like him......and that's cool, it'll bring more people to the big tent. For me, nah, my tastes lie elsewhere. He can also count me out as an "ed-head" whatever the hell that means.

53. Big Ed is a good guy...why does Randi hate him though?
It doesn't matter. Ed is perfect as a voice for the people that are moderates...fly-over staters that need an alternative to The Pig King.

As long as we have people like Ed replacing The Pig King in markets that would never like Franken, Malloy or Randi...all the better.

Ed isn't on AAR either. That might be a way for him to slip by Freeper owners of radio stations that don't do their homework...which if they are Bush supporters, they certainly do not.

54. I listen to Big Eddie every day on the net! I love his show!!!
The comparrison to Limpballs is a bit of a streatch. He yells at the righties that call him, and points out exactly why they're wrong. I'm so glad to hear he's going to be on 200 stations by the end of the year! Maybe one of them will be in Atlanta!!!!

59. The only time he yells at them is when they do so first or if they come
spouting propaganda lies. Eddie will listen to anyone I RARELY hear him cut anyone off who is not just babbling insanity. He regularly says things like "Well I disagree about you but thanks for the call please call back." That gets respect from me. In contrast Randi cuts off blatant liberals who might disagree with her about something TRIVIAL.

I would rather listen to Ed but Randi and her listeners do a lot for us and I hope she gets well soon. =)

56. By contrast, Jerry Doyle, I just found out about, has 150 stations
in about a year including my local RW radio station. Doyle is billed as a "Hollywood conservative" ....(was on Battlestar Galactica, among other things)...

He played Garibaldi... Quite ironic actually, given that series creator and director J. Michael Straczynski, is quite an outspoken liberal Bush critic! It's funny reading his comments on his disbelief when word got back to him that Karl Rove at one point said that he and the rest of the administration were big fans of the series, even though from Straczynski's point of view his epic series along with Operation Nightwatch and Earth under President Clark completely paralleled the Bush administration.

63. This what the left has been waiting for
A progressive version of Limbaugh. Although unlike Limbaugh, Ed Schultz is a normal human being.
