Hypothetically Speaking: If You Got A Draft Notice
What would you do with it?

For me. I would have to make a political statement with it while burning it. I have a pretty good idea of what I would say too.

2. I'm 18. I'd go.
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 01:23 AM by MAlibdem
Though at the moment my left collar bone is in two pieces (snowboarding), so i dont know how that'd fly.

On edit: I'm 18 and a freshman at dartmouth. I'd go. For real. I'd be scared shitless and cursing everyone I knew. But i'd go.

I'm not convinced what we're doing in Iraq is wholly right. In fact, I know it is not. But I am also not convinced what we're doing is wholly wrong. I saw elections. They elected theocrats, but so do we.

Well, I don't give a damn

But with these guys running things, I'd only be a little surprised.

6. While Burning It
I'd say to news cameras that I refuse to go all the way on the other side of the world to kill poor people so that some rich asshole over here can get more richer. Then I'd probably add to that something to the effect of giving back the draft card to Mr Bush and saying that he can stick it up his ass.

7. a failure to plan is a plan to fail.
if you really dont want to be drafted, I suggest you start planning to not be available when you get drafted- NOW.

Hopefully you will never have to put that plan into action.

9. hmm.
A. bad knees
B. pilonaidal cyst
C. i'm a cheerleader
D. more bad knees
E. get five deferrments
F. do not pass go, do not collect $200 dollars. get drunk & coked. go to alabama
G. stay in the ROTC until the war is over.

those reasons seem to be good enough for libby, limbaugh, lott, cheney, bush, and rumsfeld.

seriously though, i intend to burn my draft card, and mail the ashes to the whitehouse in a urine soaked envelope with my return address.

10. Funny thing...
I finished my 20, USN, last February... and am subject to recall for the next 9 years. If I were drafted (recalled), if I refused I'd be subject to losing my retirement, medical, and all other benefits... so I'd either go or lose my home.

So, I'd go and do my duty. And complain a lot.

22. Yeah, I got my 28
If they called, I would say that i was 66 years old, 16 years away from doing anything military, 12 pounds over the weight limit, and no way in hell could I pass a PT test. What desk would you like me to man and count paperclips??

It isn't technically "retirement" pay, it is "retainer" pay in the event we need you later (someone explained that to me back in the early sixties).

24. Yeah...
Navy doesn't retire you until you hit your 30 year mark, until then you're in the 'Fleet Reserve', and you aren't 'retired' but 'on retainer'.

roll my draft notice up real tight, flick my bic,
and use it as a torch to burn the flag.

Just to piss people off, mind you.

13. It depends on the context and if there was an "imminent threat"
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 01:52 AM by Clarkie1
If the country had a legitimate president and the there was truly an imminent threat, I'd go.

If you are hypothetically talking about getting a draft notice to go to Iraq tomorrow, then I'd burn it.

18. i can always use more paper mache
i'm in my late 20s, but that doesn't mean much. also have a birth defect -- can't do push ups, dumbbell curls or anything like that, which would inhibit me from climbing a rope or holding a gun straight...

plenty of reasons i cannot go. but the best one is that i'm insane, because i'd be off to make a paper mache pope miter with my draft notice. and if push comes to shove, it's only jail. :D

25. Dip it in kerosene and LIGHT IT!
What are they going to do, arrest me? PFFFFT. There isn't a prison large enough to send the thousands upon thousands of people who would refuse this bullshit.

Let's see how long it takes the "values" voters to pee their pants faster than they can scrape their "Swastika'04" sticker off their cars once it's THEM or their KID that gets the call!

27. Channel Phil Ochs and sing The Draft Dodger Rag
I'm just a typical American boy from a typical American town.
I believe in God and Senator Dodd and keeping ol' Castro down,
But when it came my time to serve, I said better red than dead,
And so I went to my ol' draft board and this is what I said:

(chorus)
Sarge, I'm only eighteen, I got a ruptured spleen, and I always carry a purse.
I got eyes like a bat and my feet are flat and my asthma's gettin' worse.
Sarge, look at my career and my sweetheart dear and my poor old ignorant aunt.
Besides I ain't no fool, I'm a-goin' to school, and I'm a-workin' in a defense plant.

Sarge, I wish you well. Sarge, give 'em hell. Kill me a thousand or so,
And if you ever get a war without blood and gore, then I'll be the first to go.

(chorus)

I forgot the other stanzas, but you get the idea.

No way, no how. It wouldn't be for me, anyway, it would be for my 2 kids. No way, no how, over my dead body. Send one to Jenna and the other to Barbara, and wherever they serve, my kids will serve right beside them, because they like to party, too.
