2. Reminds me of a quip I read once
Something like "If you don't like illegal farm workers then stop eating all the food they harvest - BTW - I hope you don't mind STARVING".

7. What if
you are willing to pay higher prices for food in exchange for enforcement of the law, and the concomitant legal protections for workers? How does that fit into your preconceived view of those who disagree with you?

10. Yes I am willing to pay higher prices
But that is a canard - the labor portion of the cost of the fruit/veggies is trivial compared to all the other costs and middlemen.

My main point is I'm sick of the Right Wing hypocrisy on this issue - they beat up "illegals" as a wedge issue and then just turn around and hire them for their businesses and domestic labor. Some of the biggest players AGAINST enforcing immigration laws are the hotel and restaurant industries for obvious reasons.

11. WTF?
you are the one who stated

""If you don't like illegal farm workers then stop eating all the food they harvest "

speaking of a canard...

14. As my subject said - it was a QUIP
"a clever usually taunting remark witty or funny observation or response usually made on the spur of the moment"

And it wasn't even my quip - it reminded me of something I had read once.

15. That's where we disagree.
In the assessment about whether it was clever, witty, or funny. It lacks the grain of truth required to make it so, imho.

3. This is a
typical example of a simplistic question, in a dumb poll, to a very complex issue.

4. But if they are made legal
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 06:20 PM by B0S0X87
wouldn't that make it much harder to exploit them as employers would have to follow labor laws?

EDIT: Never mind. When I first read the responses I thought you guys were against making them legal. I really should read more closely. :D

6. But if they are made legal....
wouldn't that make it much harder to exploit them as employers would have to follow labor laws?

Yes that is why its never going to happen, if bushco did legalize them, all that would happen is the 11 million newly legalized immigrants would find themselves unemployed in a NY minute and corporate america would hire the next wave of 11 million incoming immigrants at slave wage prices to take their place. IMHO

8. If you accept the false premise
that the number of illegal immigrants in the US is unrelated to immigration and labor law and the enforcement of immigration and labor law, then you have a valid point.

9. breaking the law
These people despite how poor they may be are breaking the law. I just think the US needs to overhaul it's immigration policy to make it easier to come to the Us legally. Illegals are jumping in front of people who are legal immigrants and they are being paid slave wages.

12. bdiddy04, That's right. Keep those US wages low, people unemployed
That's what this is all about. What's the point of having borders at all if we're going to do this!

13. I don't understand what this poll is asking
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 09:08 PM by Clarkie1
Does "legal status" mean legal guest workers, or citizenship?

If legal guest worker paid at least minimum wage after determining no American citizen wants the job, yes.

If citizenship (amnesty), no.

drive wages down-down-down. That's what this is all about.
