Does it bother you when people call Dean "the most secular candidate"?
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 02:05 PM by KamaAina
"the Democrats have put up in a long time": most recently, Cokie Roberts :puke: on Snuffleupagus Sunday.

Never mind that he isn't actually a "candidate". What I'm hearing through my patented repuke/DLC translation equipment is: "You do know he's married to a Jew, right?"

Somebody please, please tell me I'm wrong...

edit: "Democrates"? Are those special boxes for me to put all my Dem campaign stuff in? :-)

1. I guess if he were running for pastor of my church it would
but seeing as how he's a key figure in a SECULAR institution....

2. As a person of faith, I couldn't care less what Dean is or isn't
as far as religion goes.

The Democratic Party stands for values that I believe are in line with my faith. Dean is part of the Democratic Party. End of Story.

Does it bother me when people say that he is secular? Well, since I don't care if he is or isn't, I find it hard to feel a reaction.

3. I think that they are saying ...
"You know he is one of those SECULAR HUMANISTS, don't you? So, he's not one of 'us'!"

That's what I hear, anyway.

The truth is, I believe, that he attends a church that .... when I researched it ... is affiliated with the United Church of Christ (one of those EVIL progressive congregations). (Sarcasm as to the 'evil')

To OP: I do think you are wrong about the anti-religious comment.

What I'm hearing through my patented repuke/DLC translation equipment is: "You do know he's married to a Jew, right?"

Secular allows everyone to make those choices for themselves.
That's what AMERICA is supposed to be about.

I don't watch t.v. or read much m.s.m. If that's what 'they' are saying, examine the source. A larger issue is why 'they' are claiming that the "Democratic Party" has put Howard Dean "up" (?) ..
He is where he is because of who he is. Has nothing whatsoever to do with any decision on the part of the "Party". imo

19. I could amend your statement to say:
"You know he is one of those HUMANS, don't you? So he's not one of 'us'!!" and it would still fit for the brownshirt scum.

and I happen to like the fact that he keeps his religion out of his politics. That is, after all, the American way (at least it used to be).

I don't need politicians or the government to tell me who to worship or how to worship!

5. Cokie Roberts is a complete Moron!!!
Just because a person doesn't wear their religion on their sleeve lazy "journalists" like Roberts who refuse to do any more digging than reading RNC talking points have decided they are an expert on Dean's religious views...and Shitenopolous of course doesn't call her on it!!!

What a waste of TV time...it would be more productive, and instructive if they would just show reruns of M*A*S*H in that time slot!

6. You're not wrong. Cokie is a right wing attack dog
still riding on Daddy's credentials.

Personally, I find "secular" to be a glorious word these days.

8. It bothers me in that they're trying the branding thing again!
I know people tell me we shouldn't respond "in kind" to the pug attacks, but I'd like to hear some Dem leaning media start to call Shrub the most dishonest President we've had in a LONG TIME!

Or:
most inarticulate
least diplomatic
most reckless
most irresponsible

11. I actually read an interesting article once
that talked about his communication style as sort of religious in its passion and drawing from his own church life which he seems to have pursued rather casually.

13. Who is to judge someone's faith?
We all know that Bush calls himself
a reborn and we take it on faith that
he believes that, although his words
and actions don't support that...
but he doesn't go to church or tithe
so can his faith be questioned also by
such pundits as Ms. Roberts?

Glass houses and stones ought to
be remembered here.

14. It wasn't so long ago, that I did not know any details on religion
of candidates. The denomination was always on some of the biography reports, but it was not emphasized. Can't we just look at how their moralty shows through their actions. (If it doesn't show it's not really there.)

I don't care how many times GWB is reborn, he's less religious than Jimmy Carter, and based on programs they support, probably less religious than Kerry. Is Kerry less or more religious a Catholic than John Kennedy? I have no idea, and care even less.
