$80Bil more for war? Show us the Books! Demand a Truman Commission
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 10:08 AM by grumpy old fart
There is a move afoot, albeit a quiet one, to attach a rider to the bill for Chimp's additional funding of his illegal war. The rider would call for a "Truman Commission" to look into the waste, fraud and corruption in how the money, our money, has, and will, be spent.

<snip>In 1941, as the United States was on the verge of entering World War II, Sen. Harry S. Truman launched an investigation into reports of widespread waste, corruption and mismanagement in the nascent war effort. Over the next three years, the Truman Committee held hundreds of public hearings, visited military bases across the country, and ended up saving taxpayers $15 billion dollars.<snip>

This is something that needs to be pushed, big time. I mean, what will be the excuse from the rethugs for not including such a watchdog measure? Even the Red State sheeple can understand that you have to account for where the money goes. As Deep Throat said...follow the money.....

2. The idea of a Truman Commission is a good one but
Cons will not and have not taken responsibility for anything. None of them even showed for the Dorgan commitee meeting yesterday. I am sure Fox will not even cover such an event. Fox is hellbent on trying to take the U.N down. I have yet to figure out the agenda.

5. Write your congresspeople NOW on this - it will get Dem attention
and how can Repubs say no to accounting for taxpayer money?!?

I also added this idea when signing onto the Dean petition at the DNC - there's a place "send your ideas to chairman Dean" -

7. Cut off the money supply and bring the troops home.
$80+ billion would go a long way to preserve SS, or fund medicare, or improve education, or help the environment, or any number of things that doesn't involve killing people so politicians can show off their jockstraps and claim to be tough on "defense".

Or, it could be given to the UN to distribute for the rebuilding of Iraq.

8. Agree - that's preferable, but Dems need to start kicking a little -
and demanding accountability on this money will get attention.

9. Would prefer that they start kicking a lot.
But, I'll take whatever crumbs they can screw up the courage to provide.
