1. For a Minute There,
I forgot I was reading the NYT. I am so glad to see this disseminated to a larger audience. Even more glad to see it thouroughly condemned.

5. Several things overlooked
The Arar story caused enormous reaction in Canada -- part of the reason that Canada is remaining adamantly opposed to the U.S. agressive policies in the ME. In fact, Arar was Canadian TIME magazine's "Person of the Year" Cover and article.

Since Arar held Canadian citizenship and had all of his documentation, if he was going to be sent anywhere, it should have been to Canada for them to do further investigation.

It is against the Geneva Conventions that the U.S. has signed to send ANYONE to a country where it is likely that they will be tortured or mistreated -- the entire "extraordinary rendition" is an illegal policy.

6. Person of the Year?
Holy shit, are we living in different worlds.

Blowback never gets publicized. US actions are always overlooked. It's the only way to keep Americans aggressive rather than hiding in shame.

2. It isn't just that the neocons accept it
It is that they think that torture is okay. Plenty of people who profess to otherwise love Jesus apparently agree.

I've banged my head into the wall too many times in the past 18 months, as I've gone round and round with other (conservative and deeply religious) moms on a parenting message board. They accept the torture because "they don't want to fight the terrorists here".

3. I think a lot of ordinary people, too
conditioned by propaganda like '24' and other simplistic portrayals of the torture question, and also motivated by ignorance and racism.

Which is why I was surprised and pleased by the dems' resistance to Alberto Gonzales. I think they're WAY ahead of a lot of Americans on this.

On the other hand, I think there are also a lot of people that simply don't know what is happening in their name, and who would be as outraged as we are if they knew about it.

9. This says a shitload about our Shrubya concerning this little matter:
>>Noting the polarizing effect of his policies, Bush told the magazine he sometimes relishes criticism.

"I think the natural instinct for most people in the political world is that they want people to like them," Bush said. "On the other hand, I think sometimes I take kind of a delight in who the critics are."

This is the second time Bush has been given the magazine's annual distinction. He was last named Person of the Year in 2000, shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court awarded him the presidency.

Time's Person of the Year edition hits newsstands in Canada and the U.S. on Monday.

The annual Canadian of the Year edition of Maclean's magazine also goes on sale Monday, featuring wheelchair racer Chantal Petitclerc, who won five gold medals at the Paralympic Games, as its top pick.Noting the polarizing effect of his policies, Bush told the magazine he sometimes relishes criticism.

"I think the natural instinct for most people in the political world is that they want people to like them," Bush said. "ON THE OTHER HAND, I THINK SOMETIMES I TAKE KIND OF A DELIGHT IN WHO THE CRITICS ARE.<<

Critics like civil rights activists who were tortured as a DIRECT RESULT OF HIS OWN POLICIES.

After all that crap he's been spewing as of late about his desire to spread freedom and liberty around the world, George's particular brand of hypocrisy is just plain sickening.

10. Something interesting
A search on "maher arar" or "arar canada" turns up NOTHING at... FR. You'd think they'd jump to defend "their" guys' actions and slag off the "arab commie terrorist who's guilty TOO so stop saying that".

None. Not a word.

Any enterprising soul up for the task?
