Editor, Times-Dispatch: What will it take to wake us up? Do we truly think we live in an isolated democracy with no need to support others who seek the same freedoms? That seems to be the case for many who have openly shared their opinions concerning President Bush's inaugural address. They highlight where he vows to other nations, "When you stand for your liberty, we will stand with you."
After the devastating events that occurred on September 11, it seems many Americans are still in need of a wake-up call. Before this tragic event, many believed that we lived in a fantasy world where we were untouchable. Now a little more than three years later, there are those who question words of support to nations that hunger for the freedom that we take for granted.
Numerous articles and news reports on television have a host of individuals expressing their view of what the President really meant with the words he shared during his address. It is high time we realize that we as a nation under God have a responsibility to reach out and help those who want to have the same liberty we have. This was a liberty that came at the highest price, the lives of many.
So now we scoff at the very words that have allowed us the many wonderful privileges we are able to enjoy daily. Is it because we are selfish? Is it because of political ties? Is it because of fear? It is time we realize that we are not untouchable and that the liberty we enjoy is the right of every human being. It is a true saying, "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything."
