Bush's reading list includes soft porn
Why would the father of two daughters in college be fascinated by a novel that includes an entire chapter that describes the deflowering of a freshman girl?

Bush's Official Reading List, and a Racy Omission
By ELISABETH BUMILLER

Published: February 7, 2005

WASHINGTON

If you ask the White House what President Bush is reading these days, the press office will call back with the official list: "His Excellency: George Washington" by Joseph J. Ellis, "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow and, not least, the Bible.

What the official list omits is Tom Wolfe's racy new beer- and sex-soaked novel, "I Am Charlotte Simmons." The president, a fan of Mr. Wolfe, has not only read the book but also is enthusiastically recommending it to friends.

It is unclear exactly what Mr. Bush liked so much about the book, which is told from the point of view of Charlotte Simmons, a young woman from the God-fearing backwoods of North Carolina who is the first in her family to go to college. Charlotte, who is at first shocked by the booze and debauchery she encounters at Mr. Wolfe's Dupont University, modeled on Duke among others, eventually succumbs in a chapter-long deflowering scene at the hands of a drunken fraternity rat. Then she sinks into depression.

3. Maybe Laura skipped that chapter when she read it to him...

It's hard to believe there could have been enough partying and deflowering to keep his interest for the entire length of the book!

choice for *.

17. I'm with you
When I heard about this on "Unfilitered" this morning I was so pissed off. 52 freakin times! :grr: And I remember hearing France and Germany even tried to warn!!!! What a bunch of freaks! All about PNAC baby. That's why I think we should start slipping the words a little bit. I've talked a little bit about it to people and they're so clueless (pro-Bush people) and I tell them a little about it just to give the general gist of it and the two websites the official one and pnac.info and hope maybe they'll look into it.

9. Wolfe is the only ingelligent writer I know that supports Bush.
That's the only reason he mentioned Wolfe's new book. He's just so used to plugging his supporters, he probably forgot Wolfe didn't give him a large campaign contribution.

10. it's the cheerleader thing
When the book was being promoted at last June's Book Expo, they did not yet have review copies of the book available, but they did have pom-poms in the purple and gold colors featured on the book's dust jacket. My guess would be the book reminded GW how it was when he first went to college as a legacy, and since he had neither the talent nor the balls to play baseball (or any other sport) like his Poppy, he became a cheerleader. Naturally, as a cheerleader, he was quite the object of Yale athletes' sexual attentions. Just a trip down Memory Lane for GW, I suspect. :o

11. I love these claims about a supposed Bush reading list.
This is the guy who can't give the most basic summary about a book he says he has read.

Why does the White House insist on pretending that George is a reader?

Oh, yeah. George must pretend that he's a reader, or Laura would have his little weenie roasted and fed to the family dogs.

16. There's also a lot of deflowering in
the Bible. Yup, tons of stories. LOL. Maybe that's why he reads it and doesn't follow it. :eyes: Have you read the story of Lot and his two daughters? OMG.....

19. Maybe it's the fundie aspect of the book he likes
The "God fearing" backwoods NC girl sinks into depression after she becomes secularized.

Could that be why he is promoting this book? To say, "see, what happens when you abandon your "God fearing backwoods ways?"
