Al Franken will make an announcement on his show today re: MN Sen
<snip>

Democrats said they expected a lively competition for the party's nomination. Possible candidates range from Minneapolis lawyer Mike Ciresi, who ran against Dayton in the 2000 primary, to radio show host Al Franken, who told The Associated Press he would make an announcement on his show today.

Former Vice President Walter Mondale, who lost to Republican Norm Coleman in a Senate race in 2002, said he had no idea who would run. He ruled himself out.

1. The down side of Al running is that he'll have to give up the show

4. He's not running....and he can't win Minnesota
We've already had our go-round with celebrity politicians-- Jesse Ventura was governor for four years, after all. Besides, rumor has it Jesse may come out of retirement and run for the seat, too.

Franken is not the best choice for MN right now. There are at least a half-dozen other DFLers who have either expressed interest or are exploring a run-- most of them experienced, progressive politicians.

For all Franken's talk, he's really not that liberal. He was a supporter of the Iraq war (and even appeared at ClearChannel rallies early on), supported the PATRIOT Act, and has no problem with corporate fat-cats (after all, he makes big $$ speaking to them).

That kind of thing may play on the coasts, but not in Minnesota. After all, we were the ONLY blue state in 2000 that got "bluer" in 2004.

7. I hope he doesn't run.
AAR is starting to take off and I think it would be a mistake for him to leave.

He can do much more on the air.

8. He's had his eyes on Coleman
Franken has wanted to go after Coleman's Senate seat for a while now, and I fully anticipated him running in 2008. I think right now would be too soon for him to drop the radio gig and pick up for the Senate race next year.

It may be worth a shot, but I can't help but think he'd wait.

10. For the sake of MN, I hope he doesn't run-- EVER
Celebrities make horrible politicians. Ronald Reagan, Jesse Ventura, Arnold Schwartzenegger, that guy who played "Gopher" on "Love Boat" (Fred Grandy, R-IA).....

There are loads of qualified DFLers that could win either Senate seat, and loads who are more progressive than Franken.

We don't NEED another celbrity politician in this state. We're still recovering from the last one.

11. I hope Al Franken stays put, I don't think he could win a Senate Race
Alan Page would be an excellent candidate--State SC Justice and former Football Great.

Up to that point the percent was lower. I stopped listening long time ago. No change in my life one way or another.
