the patronage angle to paying jounalists with government money

there's been plenty of good, righteous rant about the idea of government sponsored propaganda, but another angle that's been overlooked is simple patronage.

using government funds to reward journalists is a simple and slimey way for banana republicans to use money that isn't theirs to dole out rewards for people on their side. put aside the angle that the money went to promote banana republican propaganda. for the moment, just focus on the fact that the money went from the government to a partisan banana republican as a reward for partisan political favors.

this is just plain criminal, and once again, just imagine if democrats had done this. people would be in jail for this.
