Chimp ads and Sunday Bloody Sunday played during Super Bowl
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 11:35 AM by jean
What was Fox thinking??? On AAR Minnesota this morn, Nick Coleman commented on SBowl XXXIX details (Nick is a columnist for the Star Tribune and also has a new show on AAR Mn):

  • Chimp ads from careerbuilder.com You can view all three here:

    http://www.careerbuilder.com/tv/?sc_cmp2=JS_hp1_sbpromo

The third ad (especially) is a metaphor for our country being run by butt-kissing yes men. The guy shows up at work and struggles to do his job, give his input saying, Sir, I just think it's a bad idea to name a product "The Titanic." He is rejected, bombarded with bananas and more. 'Sir' continues on course, steering the ship (of state?) straight into disaster with approval from his cadre of shrieking chimp yes men, one of whom gets up and kisses Sir's butt.

  • U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday played during second half - Nick Coleman was outraged because the song is about British paratroopers firing on and killing unarmed civilians in Northern Ireland who were protesting the govt's policy of internment of citizens without due process of law or trial. (On 30th January 1972, 13 Catholics were killed when soldiers of a British paratroop regiment opened fire during a civil rights march in Londonderry. The day became known as Bloody Sunday. Its impact led to a resurgence of violent opposition to the British presence in Northern Ireland. - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/northern_ireland/2000/bloody_sunday_inquiry/default.stm )

From wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Sunday_%281972%29 ): This incident has been commemorated in the popular protest song by U2, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" ...

1. Ok, the playing of Sunday Bloody Sunday
really really pissed me off too, simply because I 1) knew what the song is really about, and 2) somewhere in Iraq one of our soldiers was probably going to die, making is a bloody Sunday for his or her family.

7. "Sunday Bloody Sunday": vocals by Bush**...
... what a coincidence: I just posted about a large audio mashup featuring soundbites by Bush**, which includes that song with Bush** vocals. If you can stand the irony, I recommend it.

Here is a direct link to that specific track, with streaming and downloadable versions.

3. I was Super-Bowling with a buncha Pukes
(Hey, it's Houston; I don't have lots of options...)

When the monkey commercial came on, I said, "Look! It's the Harris County Reublican Party offices!" to a smattering of boos and dirty looks.

;)

Sunday Bloody Sunday - John Lennon

Well it was sunday bloody sunday
When they shot the people there
The cries of thirteen martyrs
Filled the free derry air
Is there any one amongst you
Dare to blame it on the kids?
Not a soldier boy was bleeding
When they nailed the coffin lids!

Sunday bloody sunday
Bloody sunday’s the day!

You claim to be majority
Well you know that it’s a lie
You’re really a minority
On this sweet emerald isle
When stormont bans our marches
They’ve got a lot to learn
Internment is no answer
It’s those mothers’ turn to burn!

Sunday bloody sunday
Bloody sunday’s the day!

Sunday bloody sunday
Bloody sunday’s the day!

You anglo pigs and scotties
Sent to colonize the north
You wave your bloody union jack
And you know what it’s worth!
How dare you hold to ransom
A people proud and free
Keep ireland for the irish
Put the english back to sea!

Sunday bloody sunday
Bloody sunday’s the day!

Well, it’s always bloody sunday
In the concentration camps
Keep falls road free forever
From the bloody english hands
Repatriate to britain
All of you who call it home
Leave ireland to the irish
Not for london or for rome!

Sunday bloody sunday
Bloody sunday’s the day!

Sunday bloody sunday
Bloody sunday’s the day!

Sunday bloody sunday
Bloody sunday’s the day!

Sunday bloody sunday
Bloody sunday’s the day!

6. Yeah, my exact words upon hearing that were....
What the FUCK does Sunday Bloody Sunday have to do with football??

Maybe they should have played the live version from the "Save the Yuppies" concert in 1987. Or the Rattle & Hum version, for that matter.

8. The whole pre-game festivities
were Amerika propoganda at its finest, pretty sickening. I'm glad, at least, there was a good football game to watch.

12. the nationalistic, militaristic flavor and hero worship was pervasive and
unmistakable beginning with the pregame tribute to the Greatest Generation (Heroes), to the airport ad with pristine, serene troops (Heroes) returning to civilian applause. Heroes everywhere you look.

There was a concerted effort to draw kids in, using the little boy in football gear to toss the coin with his Heroes, the NFL troops, patting him on the head in approval. I'm a parent and this struck me hard. Heroes. Little boy viewers thought, 'I want to be like them.' Older viewers might have thought, 'Let's bring those little guys up right so they can be Heroes...'

You might not be able to grow up and be an NFL hero, but you can enlist and be one of those military heroes. You'll get to wear a uniform and wear medals, be applauded and be a hero.

Will there be any upticks in enlistment numbers after Super Bowl weekend? You betcha.

Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 11:24 AM by grumpy old fart
What an inappropriate song under current circumstances (or actually appropriate)....never cared much for McCartney anyway.....People just don't listen, or understand lyrics sometimes. Like all the fundie kids dancing and doing the hand jestures to the Y-M-C-A song...if they only knew what they were singing...lol....
