"Democracy isn’t just about election and legislative majority"

It is always useful to read foreign anlyses of world affairs.

btw, there is an entry pop but it closes easily.

There are few signs of the US diluting its control of Iraq’s legal apparatus either. The occupation-imposed Transitional Administrative Law remains Iraq’s basic statute. It cannot be amended without a huge legislative majority. This is also true of privatisation schemes.

This raises a larger question. Will Washington allow a truly sovereign, independent and democratic Iraqi government to emerge, even at the risk of a clash with its own regional interests? For instance, if a Shia majority Iraqi government improves relations with Shia dominated Iran; it will displease the US which demonises Iran as part of the so-called ‘axis of evil’.
