Dean captured the support of 33% of those polled, well ahead of Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman (12%), retired Gen. Wesley Clark (11%), Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt (9%) and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry (6%). Another 22% were undecided.
Maslin termed Hussein's capture the latest in a series of episodes where opponents or pundits have forecast a reversal in Dean's fortunes, only to be proven wrong.
"If I had a dollar for every time somebody said Dean was going to be in big trouble I wouldn't have to be pollster for this campaign," said Maslin, who lives in Madison.
"Most Democratic primary voters are still against this war. They're happy Saddam got captured, but they still think we're fighting the wrong war and they know Howard stood up first on that subject," said Maslin, who also said a "misreading of Howard Dean has been to think his campaign is simply based on anti-war feeling."
