Harry Reid is no hero of mine
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 01:10 AM by ailsagirl
I know some of you couldn't care less but Harry Reid teamed up with Conrad Burns (R-NV) to put together the rider that was sneaked into a huge House omnibus bill last December that authorized the slaughter of thousands of wild horses.

I think it's outrageous. I think it's disgusting.

He's no hero of mine.

If you have men who will exclude any of
God's creatures from the shelter of
pity and compassion,
you will have men who will deal likewise
with their fellow man.

I found an article calling Reid a "True Democrat and American" and it pissed me off. In fact, there were tons of supportive comments-- all about how great he is because he opposes torture. I find it interesting that in his eyes it's OK to slaughter innocent animals but torture is not OK. Makes me wonder if he's handing others a line-- actions do speak louder than words.

I wanted to post something at Kos but I couldn't figure out how!! So I posted here.

Thanks for letting me vent!!

4. That's awful
Are you sure, do you have a link? I suppose I could look it up if I really cared all that much about Reid, which I don't.

He is too conservative for my taste. His speech last night sucked but he did do well opposing Bush's Social Security reform today. He really nailed the pertinent points and highlighted the fallacies of Bush's plan.

Actually, there are tons of links-- if you Google "wild horses" and "burns," you'll come up with quite a few.

11. Thanks for the link!
I will forward it to my sister, she has horses and will be appalled.

It sounds like something needs to be done before the poachers get busy and round up these poor horses.

As a horse owner and a wild mustang adopter, I was disgusted by that part of the bill.

12. I'm really hoping that the bill recently introduced on
the House floor (that will guarantee these animals protection) will be passed. It was last week that Rep. Rahall introduced it.

This is excerpted from an action email I received:

Write and e-mail and phone your Representative and Senators and ask
that they SUPPORT HR 297 presented by the Honorable Rep Nick J. Rahall
(D-WY).

Thank God there are some Dems with a conscience!!

Thank you

13. Are you kidding me?!
Here I was just saying in another discussion that I like alot of what I've heard from Reid. If he co-sponsored that rider, he is most definitely on my shit list now.
I know we've discussed this previously, but as a horse owner, that bill was just appalling. I have a number of friends who have very successfully adopted these mustangs and burros. I emailed all of them at the time about this stupid bill. Of course, they are all Republicans (fortunately, with many other redeeming qualities). Hoping they didn't check into it further and find out it was co-sponsored by Reid--I'll never hear the end of it!
Now what we really need, is a bill that outlaws U.S. export of horsemeat. It's illegal to sell in our own country, and we are down to only two slaughterhouses (IL and TX). If it couldn't be shipped off to Europe and Asia, that would end the trade. It would also stop the knackers from loading up truckfuls of failed racehorses at the tracks for the same purpose.
That wouldn't stop the cattle barons' war on mustangs though, who see them as competing for public grazing land. I'm thinking that has to be why Reid did this--is he in their pocket?

15. I think Reid is a Dem in repug's clothing
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 10:44 PM by ailsagirl
It sounds as if you're quite knowledgeable about the issue. I'm really glad I started this thread because it's great to hear others agreeing with me. Some don't care, but for me, animals are a priority. Besides, I truly believe that a person who has no compassion for animals cannot possibly have it for his/her fellow human beings.

I'm really hoping the bill that Rep. Rahall (D-Wy) introduced (to protect these animals) passes!!

Also, I read that Burns (Repug) also sneaked in a rider on another bill that authorized clear-cutting... what a crook.

17. What a bunch of BS
Can't people think for fifteen seconds before they swallow a big steaming piece of...er...horseshit?

Even the link states that the horses can only be auctioned if they are over 10 years old,

Put aside whatever you feel about the practice of eating horses which should outrage people no more or no less than eating a burger or uncle elmer's venison jerky. So the belgians and french, who scoff at american corn fed beef are going to buy horses who have been busily toughening their chuck roasts for ten years on the open plains? Then they are going to ship them accross the ocean, then they are going to sell them for the price that horsemmeat fetches in france and belgium, which is far less than the cost of the transport, let alone the horses. Then they are going to put them in the pot au feu. Please.

Millions of wild deer, pheasants, elk, quail, ducks, geese, and rabbits are killed and consumed on old and newly created federal lands every year. Tens of millions of beef cattle graze on federal lands.

If you're outraged about them too, you have plenty of politicians upon whom to unleah your vegan wrath, not just DU's latest whippingboy Harry Reid, although one wonders if there are not more pressing issues involving genuine slaughter to invest our time on.

Balancing Nevada, National Interests

Tuesday, February 1, 2005; Page A15

Last August, Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kerry pledged to boost funding for the national park system by $600 million a year by raising fees on mining companies. The National Mining Association immediately denounced the proposal, saying it would cost Nevada, a key battleground state, 44,000 jobs.

But that was before Sen. Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) went to work. Two months later, Kerry pledged to steer clear of any program that would threaten mining jobs: "Let me just say clearly to Nevada while I'm here: that is wrong. . . . As president I'm going to work with Harry Reid and with your miners to keep mining jobs, to keep people working."

The episode shows a side to Reid, the new Senate Democratic leader, that is not that well known outside Nevada. Like former Democratic leader Thomas A. Daschle (S.D.), Reid at times has had to balance his party's national political agenda against his state's more parochial economic interests.

Mining and the gaming industry are of paramount importance to Nevada, and Reid has repeatedly fended off legislative and regulatory threats to those two mega interests. At the same time, those industries have provided Reid with crucial political and financial support.

22. Lambasted or not, shouldn't you at least tell the truth about Dems on DU?
Here, let me help:

"A French horsemeat butcher was quoted in The International Herald of Taste as saying: “I only buy American meat, which is red and firm. In butchering terms we call it ‘well-structured’, the best you can get. Out of a thousand animals, only the American ones are really worth buying. But they don’t eat horsemeat in America . They raise horses for foreigners.”

Which is to say that the horses consumed by the french are raised and slaughtered just like cows. I'm sure tens of millions of Indians are outraged at our barbaric practice of raisning, butchering, and eating cows. Heck, you may be just as outraged as them.

In that case, I suggest you work for the defeat of every elected official who would vote to allow the horrible practice of eating a steak.

24. Disappointed, not surprised
There's better ways to deal with the horse situation. Too bad the country doesn't have the desire to do it. And no, I don't think the Democratic Party can stop everything else that's going on to launch a campaign on these horses. If people want to save them, they're going to have to do it on their own like they did with dolphins and tuna.
