How can some people here be Shocked! Shocked! by Dean's speech
on monday, when Rick Kahn and Wellstone's son gave speeches with the identical tone at the Wellstone Memorial? I recall most everybody here on DU loved it! Recall Kahn screaming "organize!organize!organize!" at the top of his lungs? Or Paul's son roaring "we will win! we will win! WE WILL WIN!".

I'm willing to bet a lot of the people who are Shocked! Scared!Shocked! at Deans speech thought when these guys did it it was fine and dandy.

Dean sounded like Randy Savage cause his voice was shot, and that "yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaa!!!!" was kinda stupid, I'll admit. It fired up the people there, though. He should have popped a throat lozenge.

But now everyone who doesn't like Dean is piling onto this in false moral outrage, suggesting the guy is insane or a psycopath, unstable, ect. Blowing it wayyy out of proportion. IE the "Dean lost Iowa, he must drop out now! Join candidate _____!" mentality. In the media, its the mediawhores perpetrating this. Here's it fellow Dems. Sad.

1. Brilliantly said!

The stench of hypocrisy emanating from this board regarding Dean's speech can almost be smelt over at FreeRepublic.com.

I wish some so-called 'progressives' here could look in the mirror on this subject---they probably wouldn't like what they saw.

6. Thank you
most of the time here I feel like a minority for actually liking all of the candidates in their own way.

2. I think he looked like he was having fun
in my opinion. Others thought he looked crazy - I'm not speaking of folks on DU - but other people I've talked to. Just a mistep, but it'll all be forgotten soon.

3. Yeah have you noticed that Kerry supporters attacking Dean

for this are ignoring the fact that Kennedy gave a very similar speech to intro Kerry.

Moore gave a very similar speech to intro Clark in NH.

So the problem isn't with that speaking style... it is with Dean.

They are Goreing Dean... attacking everything he does no matter what because they are desperate to shut this guy down. Gephardt gave up his f-ing career to try and knock Dean out of the race and only bumped him to 3rd.

4. I don't think anyone here is shocked by it.

We all know who Dean is and what he's like. This was just Dean being Dean. But for millions and millions of people who don't follow politics and know nothing about Dean, their first impression has now been formed.

10. I'll agree that it sounds bad on tape if you didn't see the video
and with RW radio blaring it 24/7, it's hard to avoid. But it really doesn't look as bad as people make it out to. It dissapoints me to see the same stuff the RWers are saying happen here, though. I've heard people say they were shocked, scared, ect, pychco, you name it, someone posted it.

If Dean continues on to the nom, this will be forgotten pretty quickly I predict.

7. 1. Most Everyone? 2. Kahn Was Not Running for President.
Two ENORMOUS differences.

First, there was indeed a sizable contingent here who thought Kahn's speech was a BIG problem. Second, he was not running for President.

13. 1 the people who were offended by the memorial were a distinct minority
in my recollection.

2 people tend to get fired up at political rallies. Whats the point?

a *could be embarassing* moment gets totally blown out of proportion. It's sad to see dems siding witht the repugs on this issue

there are far worse things the GOP can have on tape

14. DTH, you are correct. There were quite a few here who were upset about
the "Emotional Tone" of the Wellstone Memorial. I was NOT one of them.

Just as I'm NOT one of them who was upset after watching Dean's speech.
I'm not sure if it's that DU is split between those who love Daschle's mild mannered tone as opposed to Ted Kennedy's fiery speeches or that it's that divide between DLC and those of us who want to take back the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party where years ago there WERE fiery speeches and some folks who were very sucessful for their constituencies by being loud, brash and even sometimes "in your face."

It was a grand old tradition in the first part of the century when the Labor Movement was important, and some of the "little folks" were not so "well trained or educated" in the "art of schmooze."

11. below the comfort level
Lots of people, both at DU and in general, expect a certain level of professional conduct and demeanor from Presidential candidates. We didn't see that in Howard Dean's concession speech. We aren't making it up --- we got real bad vibes, if not on a personal level, then as we looked over our shoulder to see how other voters reacted to the scream heard around the world. I want to see a Democrat in the White House next Janaury. To accomplish that goal, I must remain observant as to what plays -- and doesn't play -- in political campaigns. Dean conduct, on very heels of huge loss, didn't play very well..everyone is still talkign about days later!!! I appreciate that you may support Dean, and only Howard Dean, but many people are left wondering if he's our best or most skillful candidate to defeat George Bush.

I now fear Dean is going to lose in New Hampshire next week to both Kerry and Clark. Flame away, but what has Dean done lately to inspire confidence? And I'm speaking as a lifelong Democrat. Can't even imagine what the 33% of the public who are independent are thinking about Dean right now.

19. I don't support *only Dean*
I'm sick of the way people pile on and make an issue out of every little thing.

I feel like an oddball here because I'd vote for Edwards, Kerry, or Clark with joy, if my 1st choice doesn't win. Hell, I like em all. I don't agree with the non-transferable crap at all.

It's not that rational posts like yours above that get me, its that "Whoa Dean's on PCP!!!" crap I detest.

Those same people who were "SHOCKED!" were expressing the same outrage at the Wellstone Memorial. Just at different websites.

18. Watching Dems swallow the media slop about Dean so readily
is troublesome.

Are there really Democrats that don't yet understand, STILL, how much of an adversary the corporate presses have become?

I'm 100% behind Clark, but I'll tell you, I don't like one bit how easily Democrats flocked like chickens to the media clucking about Dean. That kind of media malleability does not bode well for any Democratic candidate.

You all better learn to stand up for each other, or the right wing media will destroy you one candidate at a time.

All these 'fellow Democrats' - picking up the stones the Right Wingers are handing them to throw at Dean.

Golly whiz. You'd think there was something to be angry about in Bush's Mayberry, USA.
