Judy Woodruff and Chuck Todd doing their best to screw Howard Dean!

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0502/01/ip.01.html

WOODRUFF: Chuck, there was all this talk that those in the party were worried Howard Dean is too liberal, he's going to send the wrong signal, it's going to be hard for the party to raise money. There was going to be a Stop Dean candidate or an anti-Dean. Why hasn't one emerged strong enough to do any damage?

TODD: The problem is it's the people that were supposedly looking for the Stop Dean candidates, the Clintons, the Congressional Democratic leadership of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, they didn't get together and talk to each other and get behind one candidate.

So that was one problem is that you had different people thinking that there was a Stop Dean movement. The other thing was misreading the state chairs a little bit. That maybe -- that there was this idea that there was going to be a majority out there that were against Dean. And the fact is the anti-Dean movement is not a movement at all, but more of an idea that didn't have the resonance inside the states that I think the smart people here in Washington thought.

WOODRUFF: Very quickly, Chuck, how much upset is there going to be in the Democratic party if Howard Dean is elected chair?

TODD: I think there's going to be less than we're all predicting. I think there's going to be some searching. The media is going to try to find some breaks. Dean has been very careful to keep a low profile at these forums. He's been the guy who's been sort of holding himself back, sort of making fun of the caricature that is Howard Dean. What will be an interesting test for the party is what happens when the RNC, which had a whole bunch of opposition research on Howard Dean, when they thought he was going to be President Bush's opponent, decides to start dripping that out right after Dean's elected and just see if they can make Dean completely untenable in Alabama, in Georgia, where he can't even go and raise money. How the party holds itself together, going through what could be a tough two- month stretch, will be interesting.

1. Bring it on bushCo....Your true cowardice is becoming clearer and clearer
by the day. Your thugs aren't doing a very good job of defending you either. their non answers and denials are quite telling. Alberto Gonzales didn't have anything to do with the memo he was asked to speak about and help enact. He doesn't remember what happened. He can't discuss it. Why? Perhaps because he knows just how bad it looks for you. No president in history has EVER so misused his executive privilege!

Um, dumbass, do you even KNOW how Dean "raises money" in places like AL, GA, and throughout the country? There's this device in homes called a "computer," and sometimes you can set up your computer to talk to other computers ...

Talk about someone totally, TOTALLY out of the loop!

5. I have a question
And I don't want to get flamed, but it is a serious question.

How much money HAS Dean raised from the South?
I ask because he didn't do well in the early Southern/mid-Western primaries with voters, who give the money, and I just wanted to know how much he gets from down this way.

Anyone have any links or info?

6. He's Done Better Than Raise Money
DFA - the organization Dean created after his campaign - helped get local officials ELECTED (I believe there's a judge in AL and some state reps in GA, but if you look their site up they'll have the stats), which is one of the main reasons why I support him. THAT is what the Dems need to do, and Dean's been doing it.

DFA endorsed and contributed to candidates in Southern states such as :GA, NC, Al, & AK.

45. Edwards came in second in La, Tn, Ga, Va, he won SC & NC
Edwards also came in second in nearly every state including Iowa.

What Southern primaries were held before Dean dropped out?

I really don't think the fact that Dean didn't do well in the Southern primaries is relevant to how well he will do as Chair. As Chair, he will to implement strategies to 'work it' in the South. Running for office is far different than running the party.

It's not just Dean's personality that will be used to raise money anyway. Dean will be smart about it and have people that appeal to Southerners be the face of the fundraiser or the keynote speaker. He knows what he is doing with fundraising and he knows how important it is to work the South.

It will be interesting to see who Dean liasons with in the South. I think Dean has already helped Mary Landrieu, the LA Senator, with her last campaign, that she won.

4. Whatever the RNC "Had" on Dean won't matter now
Most Americans don't care who the Party Chair of any Party is. They usually can't name a single one of them which is a reflection of how important the issue is to most Americans. Sure they have heard of Dean, and I think that would be a good thing no matter how the RNC tries to spin him. But Dean isn't running for President, the reasons that could possibly have made some hesitate about electing Dean Commander in Chief are out the window.

The Republicans always make a Democrat their bogeyman of the month. If it isn't Dean it would be Kennedy, or Pelosi, or Clinton. I think it is a non issue what the Republicans have or don't have on Dean.

15. I didn't mean it quite the way it sounded, lol
By that point, Republican will have real reasons to attack Dean and Democrats will see what he can do for us. I meant that the type of "ammunition" that Republicans stockpiled against all of our potential Presidential candidates is pretty much useless against someone who will be heading an openly partisan organization rather than seeking to become President. What can they do, call Dean liberal, hateful, hypocritical? They always pick a few Democratic targets to make those charges against to rally their own base anyway, if not Dean, someone else would do just as fine for their purposes. I'm not worried about the RNC going after Dean, but they have reasons to worry about the opposite.

28. You're right of course; it won't work. They tried to find
anything they could during the primaries, and they made things up when they didn't find anything.

But should he win the chair, he will be their chief target until a presidential nominee emerges in 2008.

To ramble a bit...

Look at it this way: One of the reasons some Dems don't want Dean to win this contest is because he is a strong figure that might transform the office of DNC chair, that he is too outspoken and would be too strong a figure and might overshadow the presidential nominee. (As to the last, he won't, but some people are assuming this.) YET--it is this position of strength, one that in fact belongs to rank-and-file Americans, that will eventually be the wingnuts' undoing. They are organized, but the bottom-up philosophy that Dean wants to encourage just doesn't exist in the right wing. If we combine great organization with this bottom-up strategy (something that some Dems have been afraid or unwilling to do), we could create a real renaissance in American politics.

The DNCers in the states aren't afraid to do this. They've been yearning for something like this for years. That's one major reason they overwhelmingly support Dean.

I'm so glad that Dean decided to do this. Whatever the outcome, it will have been worth the risk. But I hope the Dean momentum continues, because we all stand to gain if he wins. :hi:

as to why the GOP party and the news media are so worried about what we do in our party.

one would think that the GOP would have enough to worry about in keeping their God bush in control and keeping their own party members in line......

I've been amazed at the lack of media focus on Dean's shortcomings as party chair, especially in wake of his recent "I hate the Republicans" and "the evil Republican machine" remarks, which only reinforce his out of control, loose cannon reputation. He is a nightmare choice as party chair and will only damage our cause in '06... I can only hope in the next few days the intensity to bring him down will go into overdrive and allow Rosenberg or if necessary Fowler to edge him out.

though I'm fully aware ABD is a pretty lonely position @ DU. What you want in a national party figure when in the minority party is not someone who already having a reputation as a "lefty hothead" to out of the gate uses terminology like "hate" or "evil" when referring to the opposing party. I remember on November 3rd the soul searching here that recognized we can't just throw away 200+ electoral votes and be forced to run the table with left-leaning states. Somehow that idea has vanished in the past few months here.
