It's really shocking to me that so many voters would prefer to vote for candidates because they are anti-gay marriage or anti-abortion rather than voting for the candidate that has the right policies to move our country forward and make it stronger. Actually, it's more than shocking. It's scary. Our country's elected government is moving so far to the right, and it's not because people actually agree with their economic (and other political) agenda. It's simply because people care so much about these social "moral" issues! (BTW, read Thomas Frank's "What's the Matter with Kansas?" He really illustrates this well).
Now take a look at this LA Times article:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=2026&ncid=2026&e=3&u=/latimests/20050201/ts_latimes/gopseesafutureinblackchurchesRepublicans are hoping to increase their vote among blacks by going through their CHURCHES. This, of course, brings us back to these moral values issues. What really worries me, besides the Republicans getting so much power because of something that shouldn't be a political issue in the first place, is that it seems the separation of religion and government (or church and state), something that is so important to the diversity and strength of our country, is starting to fade. We've seen what happens in history when church and state are mixed: wars, wars, wars, and more wars. Now, I'm sure to a few (like President Bush), that sounds great. But not to me, and probably not to most of us!
