SPIN ALERT -- Social Security Funeral benefits

Bush argues his Social Security plan aids blacks
By Michael Kranish, Globe Staff -- January 30, 2005
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2005/01/30/bush_argues_his_social_security_plan_aids_blacks?mode=PF

---snip---

The president appeared at the Washington forum with an African-American, Robert McFadden of New Jersey, who said his father died at 57. He said all that the family received after his father's death was a $ 255 check to help with burial expenses.

----------------------

$ 255 is a standard benefit for ALL Social Security recipients for funeral expenses - regardless of race, gender, religion or ethnic group or other divisive category. For those unfamilar with Social Security benefits -- the statement by McFadden is misleading -- it implies that the funeral benefit is lower for blacks than for other groups.....

7. The smirk on Bush's face tells it all
Unfortunately, the Boston Globe article devotes the first 3 paragraphs to Bush's lies. That's about where many readers would quit reading.

Bush has refused to raise the minimum wage. That would help all minorities, many of whom work for starvation wages. In 1981, when President Carter left office the minimum wage was $3.35/hour. Now, it's $5.15. However, the Consumer Price Index has more than doubled since 1981. The minimum wage should be $7.00/hour.

Bush has also cut Pell Grants for college. Again, that hurts minority students chances of going to college.

And, how many black Repubs are in the US House and Senate?

NONE!
