Negroponte exposed as 'major player' behind death squadrons in Central Am.
Just watched a documentary on John Negroponte (US ambassador to Iraq) made by the Norw. journalist Erling Borgen.

Borgen was foreign correspondent for Norw. broadcasting, stationed in South/Central America from 1988 to 1992. Negroponte held the position as US ambassador to Honduras from 1981 to 1985, being a central spider in the rightwing web acting out the civil wars in central America in the 80's.

From wikipedia:
"From 1981 to 1985 Negroponte was US ambassador to Honduras. During his tenure, he oversaw the growth of military aid to Honduras from $4 million to $77.4 million a year. At the time, Honduras was ruled by an elected but heavily militarily-influenced government. According to The New York Times, Negroponte was responsible for "carrying out the covert strategy of the Reagan administration to crush the Sandinistas government in Nicaragua." Critics say that during his ambassadorship, human rights violations in Honduras became systematic.

Negroponte supervised the construction of the El Aguacate air base where Nicaraguan Contras were trained by the US, and which critics say was used as a secret detention and torture center during the 1980s. In August 2001, excavations at the base discovered 185 corpses, including two Americans, who are thought to have been killed and buried at the site.

Records also show that a special intelligence unit (commonly referred to as a "death squad") of the Honduran armed forces, Battalion 3-16, trained by the CIA and Argentine military, kidnapped, tortured and killed hundreds of people, including US missionaries. Critics charge that Negroponte knew about these human rights violations and yet continued to collaborate with the Honduran military while lying to Congress."

The film features interviews with the various civil rights activists and other people touched by the tragedies, and also provides a timeline of John Negropontes 'career' as operating with the far side of the CIA, singelhandedly managing the destabilization of the socialist regimes in CA while in office.

No doubt JN has been discussed before but if you can get your hands on this film, have a go at it.

1. thats nothing new
its not really that secret that Negroponte was a major player in supporting death squads in South America. He actually had the title of "pro-consul" in Honduras I believe it was, which is his current title in Iraq.

3. I thought it was his Death Squad experience that brought him to Iraq
If we are going to invade Iran, we need another method for subduing the populace that isn't so troop intensive. Rampant fascist death squads running amok at night have a remarkable calming effect on the more vocal segments of the resistance if Central America is any guideline.

5. Yeah, it's actually the major attraction of his resume.
In BushWorld, the more of a criminal you are, the more likely you are to be promoted. The biggest criminals get the Presidential Medal of Freedom or cabinet posts.
