Petition: Compensation for Iraq

Because the recent US lead war in Iraq was not sanctioned by the United Nations and because there was no request from the Iraqi government for such an invasion and because there was no act of aggression by Iraq to justify military action the war must be deemed, by all reasonable international standards to be illegal.

We, the undersigned, urge the UN to seek compensatory damages, to be paid by nations participating in the invasion of Iraq, for the people of Iraq to include, but not be limited to;

1) Full compensation for all persons injured as a direct or indirect result of the invasion.

2) All persons suffering property damage as a direct or indirect, result of the invasion.

3) All persons suffering a loss of wages or other hardship as a, direct or indirect, result of the invasion.

4) The families or next of kin of all fatalities that were a, direct or indirect, result of the invasion.

5) The government of Iraq, including local and regional governments for damage done to public property and antiquities

and

6) Punitive damages to help the people of Iraq recover in the post war period.

If international law is to have any validity then it must seek to punish violators and compensate victims when that law is violated.

maybe it's just that people are petition-weary. I signed it and do hope it succeeds in its goal, first of getting the signatures and then of causing the desired response.

I'm sorry if people are petition weary. But, it's not like it's the end all be all of activities, it only takes a second and if this were to work it might bring a huge change. If nations were put on notice that they would have to, if they invaded another country without provocation or a UN resolution, pay for every single thing they broke and every single person they hurt then perhaps that would provide a sufficient deterrant to these kinds of actions.

A petition Bill is for people who agree about a certain issue and want to make their voices heard collectively, it is not a forum for debate.

A poll or debate on the other hand are for people who have differing views and want to debate.

What I posted is a petition.

I know from experience with a couple of web sites, it takes a while for the word to get out, but then it's like ripples in a pond. Links in forums and also in blogs are especially effective. So get cruisin' and send a link to all the blogmeisters in e-mails. Some will ignore you but others will get behind it.

17. I think we do this already, to some extent.

I believe the U.S. military does compensate victims when they bomb the wrong house, etc.

No amount could ever be enough for a life, and I'm not sure the U.N. is the best forum to pursue this.

The whole war is a violation of international law, thus every injury, death, and $ worth of damage should be compensated - imo.

And regarding the damage, we are spending $$$ to rebuild the country already. Whether it is sufficient or not may be a matter of debate.

and to not sign the petition. I too wish the insurgents would stop and allow the US to leave, but ultimately - because the US started the war, in my opinion responsibility rests with the US and the "coalition of the willing"

international right to defend their sovereignty from unprovoked invasion and attack by a foreign aggressor?

oh, and those $$$ we're spending to "rebuild" the country? that "rebuilding" doesn't include fourteen permanent U.S. military bases or anything does it? And the SECURE oil lines. I'm sure there will ALWAYS be SUFFICIENT funds for those. yeah, we're "rebuilding" all right.
