1. I think Republicans do.
It's one thing to have minority rights groups playing the race card for a whole group of people whom are being discriminated against. It's another to have the GOP play the race card when they don't get their way regarding one or two people.

2. racism is real
Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 12:41 PM by Truth Hurts A Lot
Both sides try to pretend to be concerned about racism (use the race card), when it's convenient. I wonder where Amadou Diallo's "race card" was when he was shot 41 times for standing in front of his own home...

However, Republicans have used it way more successfully. They've basically convinced many whites that the Democrats are the "party of the blacks" and that is why this country is moving further to the right.

3. The Race Card Is Different Than Opposing Racism...
The race card is when a person uses their race to gain an unfair advantage...I am not referring to affirmative action which I fervently support to redress past injustices...

The Republicans used Dr. Rice's race as a shield to insulate her from attacks on her judgment specifically the judgment that made her such a passionate advocate of war om Iraq...

It is really quite sad because people of color are disproportionately represented in the armed forces and they are the first to die in these wars....

4. I think you need a third choice - "About Equal"
Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 12:49 PM by yardwork
Unfortunately, racism is still institutionalized in the United States. Everybody uses it inappropriately.

Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream that one day people would be judged by the content of their characters, not by the color of their skin. We're a long way from that ideal.

However, using the "race card" is only one issue. Overall, the Republicans (especially bushco) have an atrocious record. Support for Democrats, flawed as we are, is the logical choice for anyone who wants to promote equal rights for everybody.

8. This is part of the reason we need to consider Wellington Webb for DNC
They can't accuse him of being a racist for opposing Thomas for Chief Justice of the USSC.
