Rawstory: Full remarks of Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) on Condoleezza Rice
<<SNIP>>
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/index.php?p=4

....

There is no doubt that Dr. Rice has a remarkable record of personal achievement. She obtained her bachelor’s degree at the tender age of 19. Speaking as someone who did not earn a bachelor’s degree until I had reached 77 years of age, I have a special appreciation for Dr. Rice’s impressive academic achievement. She then obtained a doctorate in international studies, and quickly rose through the academic ranks to become Provost of Stanford University.

....

The stakes for the United States are too high. I cannot endorse higher responsibilities for those who helped set our great country down the path of increasing isolation, enmity in the world, and a war that has no end. For these reasons, I shall cast my vote in opposition to the confirmation of Condoleezza Rice to be the next Secretary of State.

2. Has Rice been confirmed?
I know they said today would be the day, but haven't heard anything conclusive yet.

5. Not an exact transcript
Rawstory may have Senator Byrd’s remarks as prepared, but they are not quite the remarks as delivered.

Among other things, in his peroration, Byrd asks, “when will our boys come home", which is not quoted in the Rawstory transcript.

I was happy to see him put the blame where it lies, in this administration's lap. Too often they blamed "bad intelligence," when it wasn't bad at all. They were faced with the CIA coming to them time and again saying, "no, that's not true, take that out of the speech" and they shoved their agenda through anyway, lies and all.

I was happy to see he brought up 9/11 and Richard Clarke, as well. Can't let that be swept under the rug. With this regime, this is the ONLY time we seem to be able to hold them accountable, when they are wrongly proposed for a promotion.
