7. Could this work with senators too?
The neocons could care less about what the UN says, but might listen to what the senators have to say. Maybe this petition can be cc'd to the senators as well.....

8. Maybe, but that's not the point of this one
the people signing this care what the UN thinks, many are outside the US so we care what the UN thinks more than what the US thinks. If you want to write your Senators please do, but I think what's going to happen is that the neocons will get Israel to start the bombing and then the US will have to rush to help Israel defend itself so by then the Senators won't even have much say in the matter.

9. Got it
I didn't know this was targeted at people outside the U.S., so it does make sense to address it to the UN. The senatorial idea might work better for a domestic campaign. Your last scenario is extremely troubling, especially since it is quite realistic.

10. Unfortunately that's pretty much what Cheney said
'might' happen. At any rate, I love looking at the signatures on the petition because they literally come from everywhere. Looking at the last 50 signatures there are people from the US, UK, Tanzania, Iran, Canada, Pakistan, Sweden, Switzerland, India, and Australia. I don't know if the UN will do anything at all, but it starts to set a tone of vast international opposition to further US aggression.

20. Why did you sign?
This petition is fairly vaguely worded. Do you really mean that the UN should use all their "diplomatic and political" powers to prevent the U.S. from attacking Iran under all circumstances? No matter what Iran does? There is no circumstance whatsoever in which such an attack may be justified?

Next, just what does all "diplomatic and political" powers mean? Should the UN threaten to declare war, or authorize member states to do so, on the U.S., in order to prevent war with Iraq? That is, after all, one of its diplomatic and political powers.

Of course, I suspect the real reason is simpler. This is an online petition that doesn't really mean anything, and is just to make a simple point.
