but the Senate might feel that they need to send a message to the President that there is a limit to what kind of stuff they will take.

Very frankly the Republicans could have just force the issues and get Condi and Alberto confirmed for the inaug..

The questions is why they did not? The speech by Bush sure got many of them jittery. Now let just see what they really feel on the 25th.
Bush is creating a mess and they all know it. Bush is playing on party loyalty to get his way stirring up partisan politics. I do see cracks appearing here and there.

4. I see their party imploding over the next 4 years.
It happened here in Illinois. The republicans ran this state, but no longer. Corruption scandals and general stupidity have brought them down.
