After reading this I have decided to break out the fried chicken, grits, collard greens, sweet potato pie, watermelon, and 40 oz. malt liquor and have a party.

Rather than having inner city schools closed so the students enjoy a lazy, do-nothing holiday, they ought to stay in school and spend the day learning about Martin Luther King Jr.

Sorry: I prefer, next week, to celebrate Jan. 19th: the birthday of General Robert E. Lee and just don't have time for any other celebrations. Sorry: MLK.

Don't forget the 21st is the birthday of General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, #2.

If fact, for many years--before the PC movement took over--the State of Virginia had a legal holiday this week designated Lee-Jackson Day.

Most of us are still trying to get over the hangovers from celebrating Kwanza(a). Gimme a break.

Years ago an article in the New York Review of Books outlined a seemingly irrefutable case that King had condoned the rape of a girl by his followers. He is known to have bedded three different women the night before he was killed, apparently a common practice for him. In brief, he was the worst sort of hypocrite to have preached a Christian message while living his life that way. So, sorry to Mr. Huthinson, but I'll never feel anything better than ambivalent about King. Our heroes don't have to be perfect, but they have to do better than that.

King's birthday should be in full honors in the Communist Countries of Russia, China and Cuba, but NOWHERE else!!!!!

MLK day, a holiday forced down our throats, I don't recognize it as anything special and anyone I know does not. The banks are forced to close by federal law...so what.

token holiday

I'd probably be amazed at the number of organizations who grant MLK Day off but just can't afford to grant President's Day. Having yet another holiday 2 weeks after New Year's is a waste.

I don't see why February 1st can't just be designated "Honor whoever you want day". It splits the difference. Of course, part of the MLK "celebration" is supposed to be white people wallowing in guilt so that wouldn't suit the purpose.

Isn't it odd that you can't say Merry Christmas in a lot of places for fear of offending someone but MLK is held out as a Messianic (sp?) figure and if you don't like it you are a racist?

I'll honor King when the liberals honor Ronald Reagan. Not one second before.

J. Edgar Hoover, former FBI Chief when the FBI was beloved by most Americans, said, "King is the biggest liar in history". Others noted his communist leanings. The Queen of England did not make him a Sir Knight but James Earl Ray was accused of making him an Angel.

Don't they mean Marvin L. King, Jr. Day?
Do a google search on this and you will find the original Georgia census with daddy's name, occupation, and children.
This womanizing fraud changed his name to Martin Luther King, but not legally. Daddy liked the name so much that he change his name to it too, thereby putting junior back in his place. Junior and Senior were never on such good terms. Why don't the history books teach this, rather than elevating him to near saint status?

Just another morning to sleep in. When are The Rev. Jessie and The Rev. Al going to start pushing for holidays in their honor? Maybe sometime in February (Black History Month and all) they could start a day off to recognize all they have done for the po' black folks.

3. I just don't understand.
How could anything that King did be considered "anti-American"? Shit, he fought for EQUAL RIGHTS! I.e., possibly the most sacred founding principle of this country!

So sad, these Ldotters.

4. Why are you posting that stuff here?
I guess I need to see if the Hide Thread option is up.

No offense to you, but um, I don't come to DU to read the rantings of frothing at the mouth idiotic racists who don't even know what the hell they are talking about. Giving them attention and page hits just throws fuel on their fire.

The worst thing that can happen to people like that (and websites like that) is to be TOTALLY IGNORED. God, they hate that.

They need to be called on their shit.

Don't like it, don't read it.

If you "ignore" history, then you are bound to repeat it.

9. They aren't history.
They are a bunch of twisted, sick fucks who get off on hurting others.

If they were to start spewing their shit in the street, would you stop, listen, take down notes?

No, you wouldn't. How is this any different?

10. In a way, it's important.
It highlights the true underbelly of the conservative movement. It has nothing to do with morality, and everything to do with prejudice and hate.
