I supported Kerry, but never really felt a connection with him. Dean was a much better candidate, but the old democratic guard went with the easier sell. Or so they thought. Admittedly, Dean is a maverick, and not shy with his opinions. In our day of right wing hit squad radio and Internet he would have been hit hard. I admire his strength and conviction. I hope he becomes DNC chair, we need a more revolutionary mind set, the old guard is perpetuated on failure. Time for a change.

but I think he would do as good if not a better job than any other prospect. The head of the GOP is not as well known. Maybe Dean's well known name will bring more attention to the party and in doing so, bring more voters.

I will also wait and see how the party reacts, and if they will actually LET Dean make the reforms. Will the DLC throw a hissy fit? Will Bob Kerrey leave the party? Joe Leiberman?

As good as I think Dean will be for Democrats, there will be some fallout. I am sort of curious how it will surface publicly.

Howard Dean is well known, a great communicator, and symbolizes a resurgent grassroots motivated party. He would be a great leader for the party. He is much more a moderate than a liberal--but he is NOT beholden to the DLC--and this is his great strength. Liberals criticize him--the DLC is irritated by him-- thus he is perfect for the job.

A no name like that Simon guy--or a centrist appeaser like Roemer will be like poison right now. We need "milk toast" like a bullet in the head.

This may come as a big surprise to those I fought endlessly during the primary season, but this is a very good billet for him.

He's reckless. He lied about the other candidates' votes on the tax cuts. He isn't a liberal; he's a moderate. He pissed all over the party by claiming to represent the "democratic wing of the Democratic Party" when he's to the right of many. His position on the Iraq resolution vote is not anywhere as clear as he (or his core supporters) would like it to be, and since he didn't have to stand for a vote, it's more than just questionable. Yet, regardless of all that, he was against the war, and he was courageous in saying so.

As John Edwards pointed out when asked about how he kept referring to his humble roots: Kerry and Dean (children of wealth) "get it". For whatever reason, and with the qualifications of his centrist policies as Governor, Dean DOES get it.

To have Howard Dean as DNC chair would fire a shot across the bow of the legions of privilege, and in this role, he'd be uniquely suited. He's a fighter, and his mistakes or misspeakings are much less of an issue. He also understands some basics of campaigning, and will be a champion of the cause.

Whether he's the best guy for the job is something I haven't even thought about, but he'd be a good choice right now, and I wish him well.

Whoever gets elected DNC chair probably won't affect me at the local level at all. Internet organizing is important but the best thing any DNC chair could do is start a campaign to get more people to become precinct committeemen. I haven't heard any of them stress that.
