The Greens allow for it. Some day I think I might look into being a Green/Socialist, but I wouldn't mind tacking on Democrat as well if the party was amenable.

Because I know someone who calls himself a "republican" yet is very environmentalist and is not really in tune with rep values. We may get people to "convert" to the democratic party if they can witness the idesas of it's followers. I don't think there is anything especially wrong with allowing Libertarians in, and certainly nothing wrong with the Green party.

If people can't make up their mind, or have divided loyalties, they should register as they are: INDEPENDENT. Nothing wrong with being one of those....

It's a question of PRIMARIES. You'd get a bunch of Republicans wanting to dual-register in order to nominate Bozo the Clown for the Democratic slot in a race with a wide field.

You are either a Democrat, or you are something else. Some of those "something else" categories are just fine, but if you can't pick one, pick INDEPENDENT.

11. It goes back to the Days of FDR

New York has a ton of parties. Basically, they decide individually who is on their party line on the ballot. Back in the days of FDR, immigrants wanted to vote for FDR but not on the Tammany line. So they started the Liberal party. FDR was still on the Democratic line as well. Today, many Dems are endorsed by the Liberal Party and the Working Families Party which is newer. Conservative Dems don't get that line. (The Liberal party doesn't live up to that name anymore by the way.) Its basically a way for these parties to increase their influence without always dilutting their vote.

In NY, the other parties nominate candidates shortly after the major parties choose. At that time they choose whether or not to run someone else or to support the Dem.

thing. What if primaries had names from multiple parties of similar ideals on instant runoff ballots.

But then, there's the chance the largest party might win all the time due to sheer numbers. That doesn't bode well for the Greens and Socialists.

Really not sure if there is a way to make this work...but I do hope we can find one. So many of us all pooled our resources together for ABB, but I was pretty voiceless in the process. Not my idea of a good long-term working situation. :)

of instant runoff voting in the general election. It works great in places like Ireland. I don't know if it will ever happen here.

Yes! However the party should hold the line about who it allows to register. No Republican should ever be registering as a Dem. If Greens, Libertarians, etc all want to come aboard to fight the neo-con agenda lets welcome them with open arms. Infact I think we should offer this to them as an official coalition.

I agree but I also think that the existence of a party dedicated to keeping the government as small as possible is a viable part of the system. So I will welcome them to the table and encourage them to replace the Respendicans as the party of small government voters.
