Poll question: When do you think the tide will turn?
And the neo-cons will start to lose their grip on power? I think being a conservative in the form of Bush, DeLay, and Cheney is a big personality flaw, and I think by 2006 more people will realize that. There are already some cracks in the armor.

They've got the voting machines.

"Who cares what you think?"

They've got the media. They tell the people what to think, and the educational system doesn't teach us to try to think for ourselves. The herd mentality rules, and most people don't care enough/don't have time to learn the facts for themselves.

U! S! A!

Thanks for the suggestion; I've got the makings of what may become a good bumpersticker.

3. It probably will eventually
barring some Fascist coup but even then, regimes fall all the time. Anyway, if that doesn't happen, the pendulum will probably swing back. Too bad it won't be in time to prevent anymore damage to the country.

This year it would have to be a depression, disaster in Iraq, or uncovering of election fraud. Possible, but I'm one of those cautious optimists.

5. I'm not optimistic about the short term
Edited on Sun Jan-09-05 04:41 PM by fujiyama
I think the GOP will make gains in the senate (maybe 3 seats) and possibly pick up seats in the House as well in '06.

I have no idea what '08 will bring, as we have no idea what will happen over the next four years (no doubt the effects will be disasterous). Also much depends on who the GOP and the Dems nominate. I believe if we put Hillary up, we are doomed.

We can only hope that the people will wake up and see what is happening.

Of course another question is whether the voting machines are even legitimate in the first place. There is no way to tell for sure whether these results are correct.

Until all of that is corrected, I don't see liberals and progressives making much progress. But I do believe that in time, progressives and liberals will succede.

7. .
It would probably take the air in Houston or LA becoming as foul as the air in a typical Chinese, Indian or former Soviet city thanks to protected, unregulated industry. In addition to the outsourcing, "nation-building" and gradually-disappearing civil liberties we're dealing with now.

8. I think Social Security will be their nemesis
when my Repuke conman, considered #3 in the House (not the whip but next in line to be, according to him), writes me a letter saying he won't tamper with SS, I think the Repukes in the trenches are starting to run scared. The key is what they tinker with. SS hits home with too many people.

19. You're right, IMHO, but add Iraq and other things to the mix
Other things such as Valerie Plame, detention and abuse of Muslim prisoners and suspected terrorists, violations of civil rights and the Bill of Rights, abuses of power (misappropriation of $750 million approved by Congress for Afghanistan but used by Bush for pre-Iraq war purposes without approval), firing and demoting people who placed truth to the public over loyalty to the president, and on and on. They've created a lot of enemies inside and outside government, and their manipulation of the press will come back to haunt them, as it did Nixon and his cronies.

Edited on Sun Jan-09-05 05:10 PM by zmdem
it's difficult to say. FDR's New Deal and its descendants held sway for a good 30+ years. If the conservative ascendancy is tracked to 1980, with Reagan's election, 2012 would be comparable, but who can know ?

ON EDIT: Fixed grammatical and spelling errors

10. It could happen in '06
if the Dems would get out there and start yelling about every move they try. The Dems are being way too polite and quiet. Until that happens the right will stay in power and longer they take the harder it will get as they will get more and more entrenched.

had turned sometime in '04. Bush's rating has been below 50% for some time now.

On edit: I was never a Kerry fan (although I voted for him, useless as that was in Kansas) but I said for two years before the election that in a free, fair, and honest election, no matter who the nominee was, the Democrat should beat Bush easily.

The key words are free, fair, and honest plus election. Anyone who thinks those conditions prevailed is seriously delusional. Or a Republican.

15. January 6, 2005 -- Conyers + Reps + Boxer + Debaters
All fueled by the new real and cyber coalition of civil rights, voting rights, women's rights activists, Democratic progressives mostly through e-activism pressure and through those who demonstrated. That is the turning point, like the "median" in statistics.

We are moving on up and people better get used to it. No more lay downs.

join together to counter balance our power. Russia is having military maneuvers with China, Europe is forming a rival economic giant. Americans will react nationalistically and drive deeper and deeper into fascism. When we can no longer remain isolated economically and militarily we will begin to turn our backs on our leaders.

Basically, the tide will turn when enough of us hurt enough to do something about it. When the reality of our lives can no longer be covered up by lies things will change.

I don't know when that will be. My guess is it will take at least a quarter century.

This is America. We are Americans. We are democrats.

We won WW II. We beat the depression. We beat McCarthyism.

We are turning the tide here, every day, on DU.

The tide has already turned. Start finding candidates for '06 who can ride it.

34. I think it's begun already
Dems. in congress, were willing to speak up even if not to vote to overturn the Ohio electors. That was progress. Admittedly frustratingly small, but progress none the less.

There is a strong internet presence of leftist sentiment, and I think that influence will continue to grow.

People like us are no longer content to sit back and take it.

Things are changing. Yes, 99% of the media is controlled by the right wing, but I have a feeling that will change ever so slowly.

Finally, Bush's approval rating, even before inauguration, is below 50%. I don't think it's going up.

a Republican President, Senate, Congress & Supreme Court. We live in a one party corporate fascist system (which our Democratic leaders are complicit with).

As long as the republicans keep appointing more and more judges, to oust any sane and fair legislation, now and in the future, it is near impossible to challenge them.

When the US Supreme Court rules in favor of the Federal Government over States rights, sometime this year, the Republicans will hold even more power.

When the Republicans pick up just five more Senate seats in 2006 via BBV, to avoid any filibuster. Then it's completely over.

With a republican owned corporate media blacking-out and slanting stories and republican judges making decisions, how can the Democrats or anyone else stop electronic voting machines?

No, the fascist Republicans can't be stopped in our lifetime. It will be many years of imperialism and destruction, by then I'm certain we will have blown ourselves up.

Turn out the lights...Prove to me or anyone else otherwise?

Bad, cyinical (oh say realistic): when it's too late.

France will have to rescue US this time and remind us about Liberte and all.

Waiting and believing:

I will wake up sometime in the next few months,or watching ELLEN (they changed it to opposite Hardball in my area-who says there isn't a God) and my husband will call me when I am just doing nothing-an average day-when you least expect it, and I will hear the most beautiful words: "Did you hear the news about..?"

And then the country I live in will begin to make sense again.
