Novak "outs" congressman matsui as a "source"

Jon Stewart really nails it every time when he calls Novak a douchebag. So yesterday on the capitol gang Novak comes out and says Matsui was a "source" that was pretty reliable--and that made ole douchebag's job easier.

and obviously Matsui isn't here to defend himself (being dead and all) so who's to say he wasn't a "source"?

it was Novaks last jab at a dead man.

Sources talk to reporters for a myriad of reasons.

1. Some talk so they can be seen as a player.
2. Some talk to undermine rivals or policies they hate.
3. Some talk to immunize themselves because reporters rarely burn their sources.
4. Some talk to protect themselves from those who fall under No. 2.
5. Some talk -- even to reporters they find too partisan for the other side -- because they hate seeing BS in the paper and they want to make sure the truth is at least told, even if it isn't fully listened to.

If Matsui was indeed a source of Novak's -- and he may very well have been -- I suspect he was No. 5.

People can be "sources" for honorable reasons, such as defending your own policy or leaking information about the other side's policy.

And, if you read all of Novakula's columns, he actually does zing the Administration at a more frequent rate than you would imagine.

On edit: After reading the transcript, it makes my defense of the statement a little shakier, but I'll stick to it. I have no idea why he prefaced it with "speaking ill of the dead". That's very Novakulaish, I guess.

Novak has/had quite a few Democrat sources. You could tell by watching Crossfire years ago that the same people appeared over and over. I dont have a clue what Matsui said in private, but I do know that he was friendly to Novak on camera (and appeared often). Thats the way Matsui was to everybody. He always disagreed without being disagreeable.

It annoys me when younger people reveal that they fall for all the manufactured tension on foodfight TV. So many of these buggers in DC are pals, including Novak and Al Hunt who pretends to argue with him. Crossfire is Novaks show and he showcases all of those who hang with him regularly.

As far as journalistic ethics, Novak falls inside the boundaries and even can reveal the substance of his conversations with Matsui. As far as the boundaries of being a human being . . .
