Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 02:10 PM by Wetzelbill
Here is the link to his post Iowa caucus speech. This is a guy who gets IT. I like Edwards more and more every day.

1. Me too.
He looked so good giving his gracious speech last night, I was really impressed with him.

Forceful-yet-calm, and very kind towards Gephardt.
I felt really proud to be a Democrat when I saw Edwards' and Kerry's speeches.

3. What makes that a great speech?
It seems sort of run-of-the-mill to me.

5. I'm not impressed by him. He doesn't excite me in the least.
I do know I wouldn't be very happy if he's the nominee. He's a cipher to me. Perhaps he'll do something to fill himself in a little for me.

9. "cipher"! You stole that from me. That's what I said about ...
... Dean. I said you listen to his speeches and they don't make logical sense. They appeal to emotions. People fill them with whatever is in their own minds.

You know people frequently say, "dean wouldn't do that, it just isn't in his personality." That's what you say about a cipher.

I've never heard that said about Edwards.

I defy you to listen to, for example, this speech ( http://www.commonwealthclub.org/archive/03/03-12edwards-audio.html ) and tell me that it doesn't make sense.

This is a speech about IDEAS.

Furthermore, ciphers don't make great trial lawyers.

Juries obviously found meaning and logic in his arguments.

I do to.

10. I will grant you that Dean is a mirror (I prefer to call it)
reflecting back what many of his believers want to believe. But he acknowledges that he is at the head of a movement that is more about the movement than about him.

I call Edwards a cipher in the sense of "zero." That's the effect he has on me.

6. Does giving Great speaches make you a great President
Did you know that when Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address many people thought it was a lousy speach.

Carter wasn't a great speaker.

In fact Clinton was booed off the stage at one of the Democratic conventions.
So what if he gives a great speach. Edwards voted for the Patiot Act and that says a lot more about him than the way he talks.

8. Yes it does. That's how you communicate and persuad. JFK could have been
a totaly ass, but his speeches on civil rights ushured in the mood in America which allowed the '64 civil rights legislation to pass in the congress.

7. Well they NEVER PLAY any of his speeches so who knows!
He gets no media attention....even last night when he pulled 2nd place out of the air they STILL cut away for Dean.

Whatever. He seems to be doing just fine without the media attention. I hope he does it again in NH and SC. *crossing fingers*
