Dean Mercilessly Ridiculed on L.A. Radio Station KROQ
I am an avid listener of top-rated morning show "Kevin and Bean" on KROQ, Los Angeles' leading-edge alternative rock station. One of their highlights today was the 13-second Drudge Report audio clip of Howard Dean's Iowa concession speech.

They mocked him mercilessly, particularly the "yahhhhhhh" bit at the end of the clip. They played that last bit over and over. "I wasn't going to vote for him before, but now I think I will because otherwise he might kick my ass!" The DJs could not stop cracking up whenever they heard that clip, and it got a lot of play.

To my astonishment, I actually felt kind of bad for Dean. It's one thing to be taken down on issues. It's another thing entirely to be mocked. I just don't like it when Democrats are mocked by moderate to slightly conservative, funny but smarmy, radio hosts.

Dennis Kucinich has been using a great tagline, modified slightly from Gandhi's: "First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they attack you, then you win." If that's true, then I'm afraid Howard Dean backslid last night in Iowa.

7. Who can you listen to!?!?
I switched to Kevin and Bean after being throughly disappointed by my choices in my town--one morning I woke up to a DJ talking about "Dumbocrats" and this was a "music station". I called and said if I wanted to wake up to politics I would turn on the talk station and the DJ told me "if you don't like it, don't listen.".

I turned that station OFF and switched to another station which had greate DJs but changed their play list from top 40 to hip hop (I cannot bear Eminem first thing in the morning, UGH!).

I went back to the first station which had fortunately fired the idiot DJ and this station had turned into on big soap opera. A typical morning show was "Call us and tell us what you would do in this situation. Susie slept with 5 guys and now doesn't know who the father of her child is. Doug hasn't slept with her but is going to marry her anyway. Susie is concerned that doug doesn't really love her"

I couldn't take that anymore so now I listen to Kevin and Bean, but I found it really annoying that last week I woke up to one of them talking about how he urinates without touching his penis and this week I woke up to people calling in to discuss their 3rd nipple.

I am thinking of setting up my Sirius radio to an alarm clock or going back to the beep--anthing has got to be better!!

23. I moved to Seattle from LA
and I have to say one of the things I miss most about LA is Kevin and Bean. I remember being really bothered by their support for the secession of San Fernando valley becuase the preferred name for the proposed new city was Camelot. I was bugged that they seemed to be irresponsibly using a morning drive time humor show to affect serious political decisions. Nevertheless its a great show and they will savagely make fun of whoever is in the press.

33. The old KROQ....
That never would have happened. The OLD KROQ was housed in the top floor of a small office building in Pasadena. The DJs were all quite liberal, fun, and a bit off the wall. This was when DJs could actually choose their own music. No coroprate memos and program managers to choose it, and program the computer for them. Fond memories of hanging in the studio.... before the corporate scum purchased radio up.

I heard some local Seattle DJs mercilessly attacking Rep. McDermott for suggesting Bush had lied about the WMD. Never again did I tune in to them. I hate morning radio.. it's testosterone-laced spam for the soul.

that Stern did the exact same thing. I will have to take the poster's word for it, since you would need to literally put a gun to my head to make me listen to him.

I don't think the whole blow-up is quite as bad as most people do, though. Which is unusual, for me, heh.

I saw it on a few morning news programs. That speech is going to hurt him, particularly going into NH. I like Dean's message, but the messenger wasn't very presidential last night.

24. I work an overwhelmingly Democratic law firm in DC
The biggest topic at the so-called water cooler today is Howard Dean's "WWF screaming speech" and how it has changed people's view of Dean. Democrats in DC were shocked by it; taken back by it! Kerry reaped twice; first by winning so big; second, by Dean acting so profoundly unpresidential in his tirade. And I can't swallow Dean's excuse to Katie Kouric that he was just trying to please his 3500 supporters. Dozens of national network cameras were rolling! And now Dean supporters find themselves scratching around for excuses why their candidate acts so ANGRY when he must start looking presidential!

I fear voters will not forget this. This is a big deal! For many people, this was their FIRST IMPRESSION of Dean and he appeared every bit as red-faced angry as his critics say. When Democrats start tearing Dean apart -- like they are today -- I worry about how Dean's going to do next against an invigorated Kerry; a polltically re-born Edwards and a surging Clark.

I'm ready to jump on the Clark bandwagon of Dean does poorly in New Hampshire.

6. Same in Northern Virginia
I have heard that Dean clip all over the radio today. I figured it would just get play on rightwing talk radio, but that clip of Dean screeching "yeeaaaaahhhhh" was played even on the morning shows of FM music stations.

The completely non political types in my office were even laughing about it. Not good for Dean at all.

I am no fan of Howard Dean and am fully convinced he would be annhilated by Bush in a general election, but I did feel bad for him this morning.

Now, it's no the head jockstrap, um, er...JOCKEY is a Bush lovin' freeper, but he keeps his political commentary quite, saving it for his afternoon AM Freeper LoveFest...

But they played that clip over and over, laughing themselves into a corner.

I've been on the receiving end of some serious bashing at the hands of Dean supporters (and to be fair, one Edwards supporter, and one Kucinich supporter), but I felt sorry for Dean too. Hell, it was 2 friggin' AM.

Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 01:52 PM by DaisyUCSB
they have a running joke about Artie Lange, the other co-host with Robin Quivers, doing an AC-DC impression, and sayying things like
"FI-AHHHHH!!!!!"

Dean sounded alot like that impression and they were just crying in laughter

it was very funny

Now they are using that scream as a sound effect that they play repeatedly througout the show

It was actually pretty funny since they've been having Artie do his Bon Scott/Brian Johnson imitation for a few months and Dean's scream fit in really well with "For Those About to Rock." They also mixed it in with "Hot for Teacher."

I think Robin said the only thing missing from the tape was Dean drinking from a whiskey bottle.

I know it makes people angry, but as soon as I saw it last night, I figured it was going to be parodied everywhere.

Yeah, gads, I hate to pile on but if that were Clark I would be HORRIFIED. It was pretty easy to see it was going to be everywhere today.

I understand alot of his supporters liked it and I can kind of see why because that's what appeals to many of them. I think he would have done better to save that mania for touchdown in New Hampshire among the faithful rather than on world wide TV in a spotlight.

There's still time to put the wheels back on the bus though, we will see what we will see.

I'm sure they'll also do a bit on Sat Night Live. The bad thing is that on Sat Night Live they'll make it look even worse than it was.... Dean has got to change his "tone" because they're just all going to be waiting for more and jumping on it....

The media treatment of Dean will make the treatment of Gore look like a "lovefest" I'm afraid. It's going to be very tough on Dean. Right when he could use a mini-vacation - it's back into the frying pan.

21. I'm wondering
If the threads from Clark supporters trashing Dean today is going to top 1000. Do we really need this many threads on the exact same topic??

Let me ask you, did you like it when the media ridiculed Gore for sighing excessively in one of the debates? I know I didn't. It was petty and it was inaccurate and it was intended to tear down Gore into some ridiculous caricature that he was not.

Well, with your incessant bloviating about the Dean speech, which wasn't nearly as bad as is being described. It was a pep rally for his supporters, plain and simple. I don't care, and neither should you, if Drudge/CNN/MSNBC or some random radio station in LA is making fun of it. If they weren't making fun of that specific thing, it would just be something else, or they'd just make something up.

Until the primary campaign started, we all seemed to understand the media was out enemy. Now that they are bashing the guy you don't like, they suddenly gain credibility? How interesting. I can't wait to see how you all react when the media does a smack-down on your guy.

It's one thing as a supporter of a candidate to give him the benefit of the doubt and basically give him a pass when he does something questionable -- that's loyalty.

But to get irate at the fact that other people talk about it is misguided.

This is very disappointing coming from Democrats. Hmm..if they are playing along with the smear attacks of the corrupt whoring RW radio jocks they must not be from the 'democratic wing' of the Democrat party.I'm just saying...
Its sickening to me just like I was in last election by the way the Greens were acting. If people would get behind Howard, the Dem party could be once again a winning vibrant force to be reckoned with. They are playing right in their hands out of petty stubborness and some are doing it for their own personal greed. I'm standing with Howard and HIS movement he started that all the other lacking candidates are trying now to adopt and copy. sheesh I even heard John Edwards call his campaign a 'movement'HUH? since when? and that he wanted to 'take back the country' in one of his Iowa speeches.Gee how original. Then I heard Kerry trying to say Howard's stump speech lines too.
Dang it I never have been able to stand a copycat. These are decent poeple but they are being forced down our throats as 'electable candidates' and I am sick of it. I am sending my DNC payment for this year to Howard Dean.(sorry James Carville and Bill Clinton)
Time marches on.

35. I just assumed he was losing his voice.. but..
I do admit, the other day when he screamed out about sending Bush back to Crawford, Texas, and it came out like Jack Nicholson doing "here's Johnny" in the Shining.. well.. it didn't feel good to me as a Dean supporter.

I love Dean's message.. I do. It resonates with me so deeply. He is the most sincere of the candidates, to me. Kerry's message is good.. but he seems so impassionate about it.. perhaps from years of debating the republican schmucks in D.D. Dean reminds me of me.. passionate, but perhaps a bit too adrenaline prone when I get going about something I care about. As a doctor, he should consider taking Endural.. the drug of choice for neurotic classical musicians, and fear-prone public speakers everywhere.

Notice how this message, which is the most compelling of all.. is totally lost. The campaigns really are beauty contests in many ways, aren't they?

And I'm afraid it made a lasting impression. I think people are over reacting to this(because the media is driving it like they did with Gore!). I saw him going through a supporter line after a rally in Davenport and he was letting people take posed pics of him with them and he would put on his 'mean-dean' face while the pic was snapped. It was very funny, but most people dont get the self mocking sarcasm and humor. He is so cool. I get it and have got it all along. If he doesnt get nominated get ready for four more from the chimp.

She and my step dad were on their way to work listening to radio (101.something in Bakersfield) and this morning DJ was going on and on about Iowa race. The other DJ pipes up "I am so sick of hearing about this. I am a republican and I COULDN'T CARE LESS!"

My mom de-programed the station with a comment: Bye-bye BITCH!

51. Was Jon Stewart on last night?
I'm expecting Jon will rip into Dean also. It was just so over the top.

52. Dean on Stern
The bit which Howard Stern did with Artie when they used the Dean speech set to AC/DCs "For those about to rock" was absolutely hilarious. My god, it was sooo funny. For the uninitiated, Artie is a comedian and he was doing a voiceover in a Dean "pro wrestling" voice "This campaign is all about booze and weed" set to the heavy metal AC/DC. They also used the Dean "yeahhh" in a number of songs.

I was just listening to a liberal radio host Jim Browdy in Boston and even he was very disturbed by the Dean outburst.

I think that this won't resonate well with women particularly. My wife was staring at the TV in disbelief last night during Dean's speech. I was in the other room and she was screaming to me "oh my god, it's like watching the Titanic sink"

and I said to myself "This is going to be ALL over the press tomorrow"

I really don't think it's a suprise, or a media whore issue, I merely think that it's a case of a candidate acting very, very strangely.

57. Just shows his lack of media savvy - very easily repaired.
He was excited and 'was rallying the "stormers" and probably didn't know the stupid TV cameras were on. Tom Harkin was screaming his head off, too, introducing him.
The media is insidious - even Cspan. I was at a rally on Sunday and 'was chatting to the person standing next to me. The guy behind me grabbed my arm and pointed to a microphone taped to the wall -the purpose of which was to pick up conversations by unknowing rally attendees. This was a cspan mike. I would have explored suing them if they had taped me without my permission.
