7. Oh, please make Byrd one of them.
For two reasons: (1) it is an amazing story and the perfect cap to a distinguished career; lays to rest all the very early stuff about him and shows racial unity and reconciliation; (2) if he doesn't, I have to dump my avatar for 30 days.

Thanks to everyone who has worked so hard in Ohio, Florida, and every where else to bring America close to recognizing what it means to have ***VOTING RIGHTS*** and what it means to FIGHT FOR THOSE RIGHTS.

9. i doubt byrd
i'm in wv and the gop is really plotting to take him down, and is raising loads of out-of-state money to do so-add to that F on the Family targeting him and you have a scenario with Byrd in a lot of political hot water. he may play it safe this one time

24. Maybe Byrd's planning to retire?
The man will be 89 years old when it's time to start the next Senate term. Unless he's trying to beat Strom's record, or seriously believes one old man can save the country from neocons, I'm guessing he's gonna call it a day.

And if so, let him go out in a blaze of glory as a TRUE patriot.

35. I don't think he cares any more about playing it safe
If he were really concerned with political expediency, surely he wouldn't have voted against the Iraq resolution and the $87 billion appropriation.

He has a different perspective on life than most of the people in the Senate. Robert Byrd is very old. He is lucid and financially secure, and continues in his profession out of personal devotion rather than necessity or even future ambitions. A person like that has very little left to fear from the devices of mankind. They are probably more focused on their legacy, and the state of their soul.

proud of and respect. Than do nothing for the sake life of luxury Senators.

It needs to be done for our country, NOW--and what's right for all of America.

Will someone stand? Do what must be done!

Not that hard.

The whole world's watching.

29. I hope Boxer will. An email to the Dem-CA groups today quoted
her as saying that, if enough of her constituents urged it, she would stand with Conyers tomorrow. I called her, myself. Told her staffer to remind the good senator that she's safe now, for six years, having just won reelection. I contributed to that victory with a few campaign dollars (whatever I could afford). I said, as a contributor, I was happy to help her to victory, and now I expected a return on my investment. Besides, it's time for her to spend her political capital. After all, California's a true-blue state.

Also called Feingold, Leahy, Feinstein, Jim Jeffords, Harry Reid, AND Lincoln Chafee, just for fun. I realize he's one of them, not us, but he's one of the contrary ones. I figured it couldn't hurt. The enemy camp needs to hear loud roars about this, too. They need to know it's not all quiet and docile and cowed out there, much as they'd like it to be.

22. Good point.
And aren't all the inspirational movies, stories, songs, etc. about people who had ideas or beliefs that were unpopular?

This maintaining the status quo stuff is just getting ridiculous, especially when the status quo is so mediocre.

25. But our ideas and beliefs are NOT unpopular; they're held by the vast
US majority.

The vast US majority don't realize this, but it's true.

So let em laugh.

And we get the message out there of what our ideas and beliefs are; beginning with WIN OR LOSE, EVERY VOTE MUST COUNT and EVERY ELECTION MUST BE OPEN AND FAIR for REPUBLICANS, for INDIES, and for DEMS.

Now WHY would anyone with any shred of patriotism & love of country laugh at us for that???

28. That's kind of my point.
The Republican agenda is so obviously wrong to people like us, but sometimes it takes a while for EVERYONE to get it. Right now, there are a lot of people who vote Republican because they really believe that party has their best interests in mind.

So we have fewer than seven Senators in the Senate. The rest are just stuffing. Probably some of the six, as well. Disgusting.

When are WE going to hold these "elected" "officials" accountable to what we voted them in for? WHEN? Can we?

Challengers are go (Keith Olbermann)

Sick Bed, New York— Nothing is in writing and daybreak is a long way away, but it appeared all but certain in early evening Wednesday that House Democrats had secured the support of up to half a dozen Senators to formally challenge the Electoral College slate from Ohio, when the votes are opened before a joint session of Congress tomorrow.
