DRAFTy in here... Remember when bush said "If we don't stop

extending our troops all around the world in nation-building missions, then we're going to have a serious problem coming down the road."

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2000/debates/transcripts/u221003.html

And then bush said:

"We will be changing the regime of Iraq, for the good of the Iraqi people."

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/03/20030306-8.html

Well...it looks like bush's latter remark has now caused bush's former remark. In other words, we are WAAAY down that road.

Oh yes I know...bush said he would NOT draft. He also said he would NOT touch social security...and he WOULD go to the UN for a 2nd vote "no matter what"...and he NEVER said he didn't care about OBL...and he didn't have wood...and he continued to fly with his unit for several more years...and Social Security would be bankrupt by 1988...and he didn't know that Ken Lay person...

1. Bush won't bring back the draft because he won't call it a "draft"
It will be "national service" or the "citzen corps" or the "patriot corps" or some nonsense. In the end, of course, it will function as a draft, especially for young people who are not well-connected.

One way to do it would be to say to any college student who wants a Pell Grant or a Direct Loan for college that he has to serve in the military for two years. The Bush gang will then be able to claim that the students made a "choice" to take the money and, hence, "volunteered" to join the military (and get sent to Iraq/Iran/Syria/Afghanistan).

2. Yeah, its slavery for the young...
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 04:22 PM by KingChicken
There are too many idiot conservatives who support this kind of thinking, drafting the youth into military style community work programs. The old fashion conservatives believe that all young people are wild and need to be slaves for a while to teach them some structure.

They will give you a token collage scholarship and send you off after wasting the best years of your life, which all the collage money in the world can't bring back. '

I've heard similar lines of thinking come up over and over again even before this war, there are a lot of people in this country who see the young as a easy group to take advantage of.

4. Agreed. But a draft by any other name...
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 04:33 PM by LynnTheDem
is still gonna get kids' asses blown off.

Way to go, bush. You've managed to pretty much destroy the best military the world has ever seen.

Remember too when bush attacked Clinton at the 2000 Republican National Convention that two of the Army’s 10 divisions were not ready to fight?

Bush had said: “If called on by the commander-in-chief today, two entire divisions of the Army would have to report ‘Not ready for duty, sir.’”

But Maj. Thomas Collins, an Army spokesman, told CNN: “All 10 Army divisions are combat-ready, fully able to meet their war-fighting mission.”

Well GUESS WHAT NOW???

Thanks to BUSH, we now have THREE ENTIRE DIVISIONS not ready for duty.

MORE THAN ONE-THIRD of our forces classified as UNFIT TO FIGHT.

For the FIRST TIME EVER.

THIS is what happens when an AWOL and a bunch of old men who have NEVER served decide to ignore all advice from those who have served, and wage their political agenda wars.

run a war. That is what the Military does.

Somewhere between Gulf War One and now, this nation forgot that lesson. So, we must learn it again - the hard way.
