6. House Democrats to Contest Electoral Vote Count ...........
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 01:57 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
<snip>
"The House Democrats' chief hope of finding a supportive senator may be Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. Her spokesman, David Sandretti, said Tuesday that she has been asked to sign the complaint "and she is considering it.""

~~~~~~
WASHINGTON -- A handful of House Democrats plan a long-shot effort to snarl President Bush's formal re-election by preventing Congress from counting Ohio's pivotal votes when lawmakers tally the electoral vote on Thursday.
No one expects the action to undo Bush's victory. Instead, it seems likely to do little more than call attention to Election Day voting irregularities, a growing frustration for Democrats who blamed similar problems in Florida for Bush's 2000 defeat of Democrat Al Gore.
In a measure of the dispute's political delicacy, proponents are considered unlikely to find a senator who will co-sign the objection, which is required to force Congress to act on the challenge. Most Democrats are reluctant to launch a serious effort to undo the election, in which Bush outpolled Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., by more than 3 million votes nationally.
Even so, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., has sent letters to senators seeking their support for his plan to object to the counting of Ohio's 20 electoral votes, which gave Bush his November victory over Kerry. Some Ohio voters have complained of Election Day fraud, citing a shortage of voting machines at precincts with minority voters, unusually long lines and computer problems.
I think we should all be concerned, even if you are a Republican, that the U.S. has free and FAIR elections and that every vote counts and is counted.
No more wimping out. It may not change the result but if all the Democrats will stand and object it may give an opening to GOP members that are genuinely concerned with the direction of the country. At the very least it puts it on the historical record.
65. Absolutely! In numbers lies strength and limited liability
What have they got to protect? I mean seriously, what's being conserved? What is their big advantage they don't want to squander? The pubs ain't giving them crap, and they know it. Do they think they'll be any less demonized? They're going to have a hard time what with all the constant efforts to get the turbans off their heads - giving the republicans a hard time is basic survival and the only means of respite.
I can understand why each individual senator or representative would have to be very nervous about such a step. If they thought it would turn over the election, they could believe they might get away with it. But as it is, they know they are setting themselves as the target - as the example to all other democrats of what not to do and why. The more that stand together, the more diluted those attacks must necessarily be.
But if they all do it, they can only be punished as a party, and that will rouse americans' basic hatred of one-party dominance and strengthen the democrats in the ends.
And hey, wouldn't it be nice to get rid of that wimp label? What more dramatic way to send the message that we have a new Democratic Party on our hands now?
21. boxer to stand
I happened to tune to Limboob a few minutes ago( always like to know what my enemies are up to!!!)and he said that he had heard that boxer would stand, but it won't make any difference because the repugs control both the house and the Senate so they will just proceed as they have planned. MAN- I can't wait until we have control again and they have to stand by and just take it. I have emailed and faxed my ass off over the reocunt efforts in Ohio and I hope that we at least get the little victory of disrupting the process tomorrow and draw some attention to this issue-be well.
24. They'd all stand if they had any guts.
The Bush administration specifically targeted Democrats that worked with them during the last two elections. Once they get you compromising to their agenda, they then appeal to the voters to vote for the Repug because there is no difference between the Democrats and Republicans. Bill Nelson of my state has agreed with the Republicans on certain issues and they've already made it clear that they are gunning for him in 2006. Mary Landrieu proved in 2002 that the way to win against the Repugs is to challenge them, not compromise. All the Democratic Senators need to join with Boxer.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1314653/posts
I posted a thread before about some inside information that national review had that boxer MIGHT contest the election.. But now...
I was watching MSNBC and they said that Barbra Boxer will stand and contest the results and join Conyers.
Its all over DU if you want to check out there forums (if you can).
AND--Look at this:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1314653/posts?q=1&&page=51
To: Next_Time_NJ
Yes, infiltrators are keeping them hopping at DU today! Some get on and post BOXER IS YES, others get on and say BOXER IS NO!
Actually, Boxer's office keeps telling ANYBODY that bothers to call that they are just listening to their constituents and have not made up their mind.
Of course the conspiracy nuts over at DU are going nuts about this just means a YES or a NO, and even Kerry being out of the country is part of the YES conpiracy! They are truly nuts over there!
36. BOXER'S OFFICE WON'T CONFIRM CLAIM
http://www.bluelemur.com/index.php?p=530
The San Francisco office of Senator Barbara Boxer denied claims that a final decision had been made on whether she would challenge the electoral college result on
the floor of the Senate Thursday. Boxer’s Washington office has not returned RAW STORY calls for comment over the last several days.
Asked to confirm or deny reports that Sen. Boxer had made a decision to challenge, a spokesman said, “The Senator has made no public statment on that, we are still taking down opinions and I can forward them to the senator.”
MSNBC News reported Wednesday afternoon that Boxer was likely to challenge. Rush Limbaugh also made a similar comment on his radio program.
A source on Capitol Hill told RAW STORY that a challenge from Boxer was expected, but would not elaborate.
50. I know this won't change anything, but my only goal here is this:
I just want the country to here about electronic voting and how it can subvert democracy. I don't expect these election results to change. I just want the system to change by 2006. I want Dems to do what they should've been doing since 2000. We need to fix the electronic voting problem, and that starts with making sure the American people know the problems that exist. I'm telling you, outside of this discussion board, I don't know ANYONE who knows a single thing about e-voting or its potential for fraud.
54. A noble endeavor, but unfortunately...
...I think the country has heard about that, and frankly doesn't believe it.
Further, seeing as how many states and localities are just now making decisions to get into electronic voting, the situation will actually be worse for 2006...at least for those of us who don't favor that system.
61. That's the point.
If people see more evidence, they can start to learn about it. I think our goal over the next year is to shout this from the rooftops and show as much evidence as we can. Then more people will hear about, more people will believe it, and we might hit a critical mass of people.
76. I Second That Emotion.
I wish Kerry would strap on a pair. His magical vanishing act since the election has been about as inspiring as a ten hour Celine Dion medley. Fat lot of good he's proven to be, and I was one of the folks rooting for the guy REAL early on.
48. First Woman President?
I'll tell you what, if she indeed stands up, I'll be among the first to volunteer for her Presidential campaign.
57. SCENARIO
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 03:37 PM by jswordy
Boxer decides to stand, some of her staff knows it. They leak it to MSNBC. Kerry's folks contact her staff, or Kerry himself calls her, to make sure she knows he does not have a spine to stand up on this and that she'd be sticking her neck out for a lost cause as far as getting any backing from him.
Oops. She didn't suspect he'd be so weak. Suddenly, Boxer's staff goes from prepping a news release to, "Gee, we're not sure what she'll do."
Good choice, Barbara. No use risking your career and bearing the backlash for a man who won't stand up for the voters unless it is clear he himself would gain by it!
Sigh...that's our man Kerry. RIP, I say, you'll never be the nominee again.
70. I just e-mailed Sen. Boxer
I know I'm not a constituent (I live about as far from California as you can get and still be in the lower 48), but I figured that gestures of support from around the country certainly couldn't hurt...
(And no, I didn't ruminate on the fact that most of the politicians with brass ones tend to be women!)
74. This may make me reconsider leaving the Democratic Party
but I doubt it. I am simply fed up with the spineless "leadership" of the party and I am no longer willing to fight for someone who will not fight for me.
So great to be a Californian!
I'm proud to be Californian
Where at least I know I'm free!
And of the men and women who lived and died
To give that right to me!
79. Fool me once...
This challenge should have happened four years ago. If Congress had straightened out the electoral mess in the past four years it probably wouldn't be happening now. It's their own fault. No whiners.
