Is this true about James Dobson and training his dog?
If so, I am utterly shocked. In the school where I taught before I retired, the guidance counselor used his books, gave them out to parents, and used his methods for counseling. I never paid attention then, as I was not that aware of this guy.

I see he is going after our already Christian Senator Bill Nelson, who is part of the Fellowship already. I found this, and found it hard to believe. Is this for real?

http://www.geocities.com/cddugan/DobsonsDog.html

SNIP..."What developed next is impossible to describe. That tiny dog and I had the most vicious fight ever staged between man and beast. I fought him up one wall and down the other, with both of us scratching and clawing and growling and swinging the belt. I am embarrassed by the memory of the entire scene. Inch by inch I moved him toward the family room and his bed. As a final desperate maneuver, Siggie backed into the corner for one last snarling stand. I eventually got him to bed, only because I outweighed him 200 to 12!"

SNIP..." "But this is not a book about the discipline of dogs; there is an important moral to my story that is highly relevant to the world of children. JUST AS SURELY AS A DOG WILL OCCASIONALLY CHALLENGE THE AUTHORITY OF HIS LEADERS, SO WILL A LITTLE CHILD -- ONLY MORE SO." (emphasis Dobson's)"

My mom still swears by Dobson and all those fundies.

And yes, there were plenty of beatings with leather belts, wooden cooking spoons, and even the back of Mom's hand. Lovely memories...

I saw my sister get it daily, so I just kept my mouth shut and bided my time until summer camp.

I wouldn't trust a person like that with either.

My dog enjoyed training sessions. It was a challenge on my part because it took patience. Now my dog trusts rather than fears me.

19. One of the few things I learned in management class -
Employees, like children and dogs, do not react well to negative reinforcement.

That simple line will take you a long way in most relationships - assuming the recipient has something at stake in the relationship.

12. James Dobson: The religious right's new kingmaker.
http://slate.msn.com/id/2109621/

SNIP..."Although the notion that the religious right's "moral values" determined the 2004 election has been roundly debunked (for example, here and here), perception is reality in politics—and the indelible perception in Washington is now that George W. Bush owes his evangelical Christian base big-time.

One corollary to this idea is that no one helped Bush win more than Dr. James Dobson. Forget Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, who in their dotage have marginalized themselves with gaffes (this week Robertson referred to potential Supreme Court nominee Miguel Estrada as "Erik Estrada"). Forget Ralph Reed, now enriching himself as a lobbyist-operative, leaving the Christian Coalition a shell of its former self. Forget Gary Bauer, now known chiefly as a failed presidential candidate who tumbled off a stage while flipping pancakes. Dobson is now America's most influential evangelical leader, with a following reportedly greater than that of either Falwell or Robertson at his peak...."

try to train my Staffordshire.

90 lbs of pure muscle, 2,000 lb/per square inch of biting POWER, and not at all afraid to use it.

she literally would chew dobson's face off. And I would happily capture it all on home video.

16. How do you like your Staffordshire?
I'm considering one, and wanted to hear from others who had experience with them. Are they pretty easy to train at the beginning, or do they need a lot of work? Also, do they get along with other dogs (I currently have a German Shepherd)? I didn't know they got as big as 90 lbs - I had always thought they were in the 45-65 lb. range.

17. This Is Rooted DEEP Within Christian Theology "Dominionism". Here's Why:
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 03:51 PM by David Zephyr
No one should be shocked by the abhorrent actions of "reverend" Dobson as this kooky belief of man's divine right to dominate all animals on the planet and the planet itself is very, very biblical and this is something that progressive christians need to confront with themselves.

I think that Chief Seattle was a little brighter than Jehovah on this issue, folks. Certainly, I agree with his instructive words for the white Europeans who ravaged the "New" World, " Earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth."

You decide.

In any event, here is just a sprinkling of the biblical justifications that would inspire the actions by the money-grubbing James Dobson.

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have DOMINION over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Genesis 9:2 And the FEAR OF YOU and the DREAD OF YOU shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; INTO YOUR HAND ARE THEY DELIVERED.

Palsms 8:5-9. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou hast made him a little less than the angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honour: And hast SET HIM OVER the works of thy hands. THOU HAST SUBJECTED ALL THINGS UNDER HIS FEET, all sheep and oxen: moreover, the beasts also of the fields. The birds of the air, and the fishes of the sea, that pass through the paths of the sea.

31. Problem is that the CHINOS confuse "Dominion" with "Domination"
Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 12:02 AM by AntiCoup2K4
Dominion actually means "stewardship". God charged Adam & Eve with taking care of the Garden - and by extension, their descendants and the planet. Obviously, with his "clear skies" and "safe forest" initiatives, this is another of God's commandments that Junior has so recklessly violated.

*CHINOS - CHristians In Name Only

33. I believe there are a couple of
translations of the bible that actually use stewardship instead of dominion. I've spoken with several christians about their disconnect when it comes to the environment. That abusing and raping the land is not following God's will of stewardship.

20. I bet Dobson was abused as a child
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 04:25 PM by Raiden
It would explain the compulsion he has to assert his dominance over those weaker than himself, such as dogs and small children, by beating them. Typical bully behavior. And any GOOD psychologist can tell you why bullies act this way... They feel the need to prove themselves by preying on those who are weaker. This is not the kind of person I'd want teaching me how to raise children.

If he tried any of that shit on my newfoundland, I'd kill him. There's nothing more pitiful then someone who abuses those weaker than themselves. Children, dogs and cats are for the most part helpless. James Dobson need to get a life... and a psychoanalysis.

21. My dog would have knocked him down and had her way with him.
And I would help her.

My dog IS my best friend. If I want to play, she is down with it. If I want to nap, she is miles ahead of me. If I want to eat, she is ready-freddie. If I need to kick someone's ass, she is right there with me. I think if I needed to bury a body, she'd help me do that. I bet Dobson's poor hound, if he had choked on a Bush pretzel and fell out on the floor, Siggy would probably pee on him and maybe bite his testicles. For emphasis, I think.

Dobson is a loon, a hater, an abuser and probably lost his virginity to his mother in an outhouse. Fuck him. Sincerely.

22. So, by Dobson's logic, you should beat your small child the same way,
ONLY MORE SO??? I don't doubt that the story is true. It does tell you a lot about the man's character. He chose to give a 12-pound dog a prolonged beating with a belt, while the poor animal tried its best to defend itself, all over a pointless power struggle that the dog probably didn't even understand. Picking the little beast up and putting it to bed wouldn't do, because Dobson's pride had been injured. Can you imagine how much damage he could do to a stubborn toddler?

I find it very disturbing that this man has so much influence.

24. This maniac is just too disgusting. I quit reading his newspaper
articles several years ago after realizing how sick he really is.

But just as an observation, something I've thought of lately, does it seem as if Repubs are animal abusers and neglecters? Several that I know are (not close friends, just acquaintances). No Dems that I know are. They all love their pets as children practically. Me included!!!

It just seems as if Repubs love to show their domination over everything, even the animal and pet community. And this sick Dobson just proves it!!

29. I agree
I have gotten on my wife's case for her right-wing parents beating my dog. They say they are just training it. My puppy is a little hyper and all, but a firm command and some love will work a lot better. I say there is no need for the physical abuse. We got a shock collar that will give the reinforcement and it won't harm any vital organs like a kick to the midsection will.

28. Wack job
Dobson is a wack job. My Christian right wing mother-in-law gave me one of his books to read before I got married. I tried to read the book, but couldn't believe what was in it. Basically it said that women should look to their husband before they speak and not have a job outside of being a wife and a mother, and I only got through 3 chapters.

At Christmas, my mother-in-law gave two of his books as gifts to 2 of my wife's cousins. After my wife and I left their house, I strongly said that I will never read any of those books because Dobson is psycho.

I could understand that he was so popular if it was the 1920's or something. But his theories are very outdated. As a teacher (and a dog owner), I see positive reinforcement as a far better motivation technique than physical harm.
