Iowa Losers: Unions, Party Big Wigs, NOW, Gore, Harkin, Carter, etc.
Where is our support coming from?

Is the party shifting right now?

How influential are these people and org's going to be in the next two months?

Power back to the people?

1. Well, at least you didn't make any sweeping generalizations.

2. NOW? Kerry is practically a founding member.
Geez... NOW would be thrilled to have Kerry as the nominee.

8. NOW Endorsed CMB and Patricia Ireland was the
campaign chair.

And Braun did not even make to Iowa.

Even the New York Times and Washington Post, two papers that will endorse the eventual Democratic nominee, criticized the NOW endorsement last year.

Braun's withdrawl was not a victory for NOW.

3. Interesting, so...
Just by supporting a guy they've lost their credibility? What are you saying?

Did you see Gore's speech last week?

4. NOW hasn't lost and one of their founders has endorsed
either Kerry or Clark...can't remember which at the moment.

How did NOW get pulled into this?

6. I don't think it's a shift necessarily....
I think it's probably a shrinking base, mostly unions. Union membership has been steadily declining over the years. Iowa Democrats, by all accounts, are pretty liberal but I don't think the "youth vote push" that guys like Dean and Kucinich made resonate with them much. I'm beginning to believe that highly youth-oriented campaigns end up alienating older voters.

11. I think you're right about
the unions being a shrinking base. Let's face it, many of the jobs that were traditionally union jobs are going overseas AND new jobs tend to be in industries that have not traditionally unionized. All them new fangled white collar workers never saw themselves as union material--now their jobs are being shipped out too.

13. Sorry. It was Dean that called up and tried to use Carter.

9. Considering the fact that neither Kerry nor Edwards are to the right
I am not sure where you would draw that conclusion. I dont know enough about what happened in Iowa, but I heard some analysts crediting Kerry's TV ads. In all the talk about meetups and the internet, we tend to lose sight of the fact that most people get their information from television still.

10. I doubt it!
Gephardt and Kerry both had great ads, while Edwards and Dean ran ads that sucked...

In a state like Iowa, I think television ads had little to do with the outcome.

12. I agree
the unions really lost. Gep and Dean who had the most union support came in third and fourth.
