Interesting results from Iowa I must say. I have heard a lot of people saying that Iowans went out to vote for who they thought had the best chance of beating bush yet they seem to have rejected the two strongest candidates in terms of organization.

While ghep was not my choice I do not rejoice in the idea that his labor backing is now in limbo. You may or may not agree with thier choice of candidates but the labor unions are damn effective when it comes to organization and getting their members to the polls/working phonebanks/pounding the pavement.

If the goal is to beat bush we need these people.

Dean also has incredible organization and union suport not to mention the largest warchest yet they chose to ignore that also and pick the two candidates with no money and hardly any ground troops waiting to ramp up against bush.

It seems like a very bizare choice to me if fighting bush is the priority in the end.

Then again if organization is that important it sure didnt pan out in Iowa sdo who knows.

But what will the unions do now?

1. Wait a while
for the dust to settle, then go for the candidate that looks like a winner. That would be my guess.

2. I guess you weren't watching CSPAN at all this weekend
While not a Dean supporter I did see many union members sporting signs AFSCME for Dean and IUPAT for Dean. Union members are not robots who look to their "leadership" for whom they are to vote. Union members, like the majority of working class Americans who are not in a union, know who is really pro worker, the one candidate serving in congress who took the time on July 10 to vote against George Bush's overtime proposal and that man is Dennis Kucinich.

IMHO, it is easy to speak platitudes about so called humble beginnings as the son of a milkman but actions are far more important than words. People in Missouri know that Gephardt's actions mean little to working people and thankfully those in Iowa sent him a message.

I am sure the Kucinich campaign looks forward to the support of hard working Americans, those in unions and the majority who are not in unions.

3. Dean was endorsed by
AFSCME a few weeks ago so the AFSCME crew wasn't exactly bucking the union.

4. the unions will be there in November
they have at least at much as stake as everyone else, probably more. With Bush intervening in the dock workers strike out west two years ago and the proposed "mail order worker" legislation he announced a few weeks ago not to mention Bush is trying to screw over workers on overtime and health benefits, yeah, they will be there supporting whomever is the democratic nominee.
