"Get out of my house!!!!! You can't say penis in my house!!!!"
Ever see the movie, "Born on the Fourth of July"?

It's the story of Ron Kovic, a disabled Vietnam veteran.

I watched it for the first time last night.

Ron was raised in a good "christian" home; his mom was a notorious fundie.

He got caught up in patriotic fever, and encouraged by his mom, joined the Marine Corps.

Ron accidentally shot one of his own men. His men accidentally killed innocent women and children. Ron was paralyzed from the waist down from a bullet lodged in his spine. And somewhere along the line he realized that his government had lied to him.

He came home and tried to drown his problems out in alcohol.

He tried to explain his pain to his mother, but she wouldn't hear it.

He finally broke down and lashed out to her: "I can't even feel my own penis!!!"

That's when she threatened to throw him out. For drinking, and for saying the dreaded "P" word.

He joined an anti war group, and tried to get into the Republican Convention.

He was spit on, beaten, called a traitor, dragged out of his wheelchair and arrested -- all the while Nixon was on the podium spouting the standard bullshit "we owe a debt and honor to our Vietnam Veterans".

Things sure haven't changed that much in all these years.

You still have these religiously insane "christians" who are anything but christian -- especially when it comes down to caring and listening to those in pain.

And we still have an insane lying fuck of a president spouting bullshit rhetoric that doesn't match his deeds.

And we still have evil, nasty, insincere citizens who want to beat and shout down those who don't agree with them.

2. That was one of the few moments in the movie when I busted up
laughing.

You can't say penis in my house!

The rest of the time I altered between crying for the guy and and being pissed at pretty much the same people he was pissed at.

5. you know
my mom's generation was like that -- they were certain things that you just did NOT talk about.

and all of her sisters, my aunts, were fundies.

3. It's like they went from Liviticus to Paul and skipped over Jesus entirely
I was thinking someone should start a movement, Christians for Jesus

4. We have always had...
Evil, nasty, insincere citizens who want to beat and shout down those who don't agree with them.

On the other hand, those people did not get paid princely sums to spout their venal dreck on our airwaves.

But that's ok. It is cyclical. History teaches us that. It is hard to sustain sheer numbers of the eternally-angry. They will look for a little peace in their lives, eventually and slink away from their stances, while their high priests of pissed-off will return to the little 100 watters they came from.

The broadcast executives who enabled all this? They are the ones will be called to answer for their actions. They have abrogated all responsibility. Account they must, someday.

13. My dad told me when I was a kid that his generation would never allow
another Vietnam, would never put their children into hazard as they were thirty years ago.

It didn't work out like that, though. People really do have short memories, even those who ought to remember most vividly.

and who will help them overcome their mental deficiencies?

seeing people blown apart has got to be a nightmarish sight.

killing innocent little children has got to fuck with one's head.

14. That is why I am considering studying and specializing in PTSD
I suspect there will be considerable demand for such psychologists in the near future.

22. It won't be funded (PTSD) counseling ... at least for the next four years
Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 06:15 PM by ElectroPrincess
But I will volunteer my services. I'm an addiction oriented counselor and have treated (through DOD) infantry soldiers who mostly used alcohol to self-medicate.

PTSD shows up in many horrible ways and sometimes has a delayed onset of symptoms. Many soldiers feel so much guilt, you can't rule out concurrent Clinical Depression.

I noted, especially with the young infantry soldiers (under 25 y.o.) that the abuse of alcohol was often not indicative of a pure "addiction" but as a way of drowning out the pain of being overseas and unable to link with friends and family.

Let's hope the tide begins to change in 2006 where we can vote in MANY *genuine* Democratic representatives. A pity Gore did not serve as President over the past four years, both he and his wife, avidly supported "unobtrusive" mental health initiatives.

11. I saw that for the first time in years, the other day
I too was agained stunned at what an ignorant woman his mother was. Here is her son paralyzed for life and all she could think of was that she didn't want to know the truth.
I wonder if she has ever come around.

a posting like yours and the reason becomes crystal clear.

What kind of incompetent, sadistic "Supreme Being" would have created this place in which we live?

every American over the age of 16.)

But I guess if nobody ever says 'penis' nobody will ever have one...
