How does Al Gore look now?
I think it says something about him. He can't dictate where voters go. The Harkin endorsement didn't mean much either.

1. Like a Stiff
Gore wasn't blessed with great political instincts. Remember his makeup job for Debate I?

4. I don't think it means much for his stature
But I think his endorsement, Saddam's capture, Dean's series of gaffes, plus Dean's further endorsements have all mixed up, and are strangling him like a python.

8. Not just Gore
This seems to suggest (or "prove") that "celebrity" political endorsements, whether from Gore, Harkin, Carol Mosely-Braun, etc., don't necessarily translate into big gains for a candidate.

12. Maybe Gore's endorsement was poorly timed
perhaps it would've had a more positive effect if it had been given closer to the caucus date. Just speculating.

19. Well, Harkin endorsed Dean
Harkin, a man who took his state in the '92 caucus with 64%. One would think the Iowa Senator's endorsement should have had a bigger impact.

15. Huh?
Can't the guy make up his own mind and endorse whoever he wants?

Also, "big name" endorsements are cool - but thinking or suggesting that the endorsee can take it to the bank as a collateral for voters needs to stick to his/her daytime job.

Endorsements provide, more than anything, publicity and a sense of "legitimacy" - last time I checked, votes come from voters.

Aside from that...

Isn't it better to try and err, than to play safe?

I like Gore a lot more, since he started speaking upfront.

Doesn't negate that I'd like him better endorsing Clark tho!

20. What about Harkin?
The voters picked the one Harkin didn't endorse, what message does that send? Sorry Tom but you don't really matter.

And then there were none!

21. Am I really reading this garbage?
Am I correct in thinking that this whole thread full of posters thinks Al Gore is a loser? Let's state the obvious: Gore endorsed my candidate, and my candidate is losing in Iowa tonight. But beyond that, are all of you so...so, do you really all hate Al Gore that much?

I think Ted Kennedy is a fine senator and a fine liberal.

I think the world of Michael Moore. He's done wonderful things for the cause of progressivism.

Does everyone see where I'm going with this?

I just wanted to register my disgust at the apparent hatred of a guy who rightfully won the last election.

25. I like to watch it all even if I like some one, lets see the field.
I felt when Bush got all that money and made the party fall in line before all this in 2000 that it left the GOP with him even when they had better people. He went in on a name. It is best to sort of let them fight it out. We all saw Bush was going to play dirty when we saw what he did to McCain.I do not like that Kerry voted to let Bush go to war but guess I will take it as I like the rest he stands for.

26. I think he looks like a man who speaks his mind
without trying to manipulate.

I think his recent statements show him to be ahead of where most people are---far enough ahead so that most people aren't able to immediately follow but not so far ahead that he has no influence.

Carter lost, Mondale lost, Gore lost

I don't know that it diminishes them as people.
