I am pretty convinced who the 2008 Republican nominee for
President will be

Senator George Allen (R) Virginia.

I'm still trying to figure out who the Democrats will nominate. I think Phil Bredesen (D) Tennessee will be the guy.

6. It won't be Jeb Bush.
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 10:39 PM by Tony_FLADEM
Most people believe this. A Bush dynasty issue will arise if Jeb runs for President. After 12 years of a President Bush people will want something new.

George Allen will be the nominee. The GOP will never nominate a social moderate and I don't believe other Conservatives in the Republican Party have the appeal of George Allen.

The Democrats will NOT nominate someone from a blue state. If Don Siegelman(sp) (D) Alabama had won re-election in 2002, or Roy Barnes (D) Georgia had not been Diebolded one of these 2 would be President elect right now.

11. You assume the GOP "leadership" is still thinking rationally.
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 11:18 PM by NEOBuckeye
The next GOP president will almost certainly be a Bush, whether it is Jeb, or even George again.

Yes, I did say George, which is still more likely than Jeb, given Jeb's CATHOLIC, BI-RACIAL family (two strikes as far as the ascendant, protestant christian fundamentalists are concerned). What makes you so certain that the Republicans won't repeal their own 22nd Amendment, passed in direct fear of another multi-term Democratic FDR, just so they can install this fool again for a third term? Sen. Hatch in Utah is strongly for repealing the natural born citizen requirement for the Presidency, so Austrian-born Arnold the Gubernator can run, something that would have been unthinkable even 5 years ago.

Anything is possible with these people.

19. All term limits should be repealed
Had there not been term limits, Bill Clinton would be in his fourth term right now. Probably.

30. If Bush repeals that to run for a 3rd term then
I'm sure the Dem candidate will be Bill Clinton. That should be interesting.

8. What makes you say that?
I was researching him a little just today. He seems totally unimpressive. What makes you think he'll be the nominee (not being confrontational, I 'm just a political junkie...)

As for Bredesen, my only problem with him is that he's too empty. He doesn't have a lot of accomplishments under his belt (course, neither did George. W. Bush)

So, what made you make those picks? Again, just wondering.

9. I am still trying to decide who the Democrats will nominate.
Everyone is saying Bill Frist. I don't think Frist is as appealing as George Allen. George Allen comes from a bedrock conservative state that is important for social conservatives. I don't think Frist has anything he can run on.

The Democrats will nominate a Governor from a red state. I don't know much about Bredesen, but I heard he has a good fiscal record.

14. You said it
What the hell did Dubya have going for him against Gore? Absolutely NOTHING at all, other than fucking Murdoch's spin machine and his brother keeping African-Americans from voting in Florida. The man was a worthless Governor and a failure at everything else in his entire pathetic life.

Jeb isn't much better, which gives him that much more of an edge.

Good looking, bible thumping hate monger with a nice bonus of blue state electoral votes.
As for Democrats I predict a Richardson/Obama ticket or maybe a Bayh/Ford ticket or possibly a Salazar/Granholm ticket

15. I'm a big fan of our Gov. Bredesen but he makes Kerry look like
a rock star in the charisma department- Plus he is not a southerner- he's a yankee transplant. He is very media shy- but he is brilliant and he did win over a lot of repubs because because of his business acumen but I don't think has that burning ambition.

18. Presidents rise to power quickly..
who would have thought Bob Kerrey..elected to the Senate in 1988, would be running for President in 1992? What about Al Gore, who was elected to the Senate in 1984, and first ran for the nomination in 1988? Jimmy Carter was elected as Governor in 1970, and began his first campaign for President at the end of 1974. John F. Kennedy was first elected to the Senate in 1954. And don't forget FDR, not elected Governor of New York until 1928..or Wilson, not elected Governor of New Jersey until 1910.

In 1988 or 1989, who would had guessed the nominee in 1992 would be Bill Clinton? Often the person nominated is the one least expected!

It's Hillary for sure as the Democratic nominee.

It's McCain for the Republicans if his health holds up. Otherwise, I'd go with Chuck Hagel, but not confidently.

23. Gov. Bredesen's Problem: TennCare
The red-republicans in Tennessee keep blocking an income tax and trying to force Gov. Bredesen to cut TennCare. They got two more state senate seats on November, but at least Senator John Wilder will still be the Lt. Gov. as even the Republicans recognize he's the best man for the job. Sen. Wilder supported the Income Tax last time around, so it still has a chance. Unless Bredesen can get additional taxes, he'll have to cut TennCare, that will kill his chances for the Democratic nomination in 2008.

24. There is no GOP, there are no elections...this thread is so deluded
it makes my head spin.
The only question for 2008 is: will the junta still be in power, or having lost war after war has it imploded?

''We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And
while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll
act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and
that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you,
all of you, will be left to just study what we do.''

32. That he does
President Gore could win, because the GOP wasn't brainwashed into hating him the way they were with Kerry, so he's already established in people's minds. He's got a great resume (eight years as VP, c'mon), he's a southerner, AND he's proven he can win a national election.

33. Sorry, no way.
George Allen is dumb as a brick - not that that seems to be an obstacle. But - bigger problem - he has racial skeletons in his closet. Remember that Trent Lott was brought down by racist comments. Even the repukes, evil as they are, can't be seen as condoning a guy who'd be wearing white sheets if he wasn't parading around the senate.
