11/16/04 - Rooney Demands Refund For Santorum's Cyber School Costs

PA Dem Chair Says Santorum “Robbing Pennsylvania Students” for Personal Gain

HARRISBURG, PA: After days of news reports detailing how Senator Rick Santorum has taken $100,000 in Pennsylvania taxpayer dollars for cyber-schooling his children, Rep. T.J. Rooney, Chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, today called on Santorum to refund Pennsylvania's children the taxpayer dollars he has taken from their education to put towards the education of his own children.

Santorum and his family live in Virginia.

Rooney said today, “Senator Santorum keeps going around trumpeting family values, trying to convince citizens that he is the voice for the Pennsylvania family. Now we learn that apparently Mr. Santorum believes that family values means taking from the children who need our help to pay huge bills for his own family, even though they don't live in Pennsylvania.”

According to the Associated Press, the Penn Hills School District in suburban Pittsburgh has spent $100,000 on the Internet-based education of Santorum's children since 2001-2002. Santorum purchased his two bedroom residence in the school district in 1997 for $87,800. His Leesburg, Virginia home was assessed at $757,000 this year.

“This is a classic case of the rich man's Robin Hood,” Rooney followed. “Mr. Santorum makes a generous salary and lives in a very expensive home in Virginia, but he didn't let that stop him from unfairly taking from the Pennsylvania students who need those school funds desperately.”

1. I don't think it will "take him down....."
all by itself.... but it will be a powerful weapon in an overall campaign. Santorum survived last time because the Dems ran a fool against him (Ron Klink). I hope to hell that doesn't happen again. And if it's Bob Casey, Jr. -- Santorum is in big trouble.

7. true.. but he's entrenched and truly sleazy. so it'll still take a big gun
to beat him. I regret that one key might be to match him up against another pro-lifer (as Casey is) because that is a huge deal here in PA.

8. yeah, it might be necessary...
especially if they put the anti-gay marriage amendment on the ballot in '06. if that's the case, he might be the ONLY way to beat him

6. Santorium "job" during law school
I have heard Santorium was receiving a full time salary as an aid to former State Senator Doyle Corman when Santorium was going to law school , roughly a three hour drive from the job.

Is there some way we could find out if this is true?

Wouldnt people be ticked off IF the public payroll (taxpayers) sent him to law school?

12. if you mean make santorum seem like a carpetbagger....
that's exactly what he did in 1990 when he ran for congress against dem Doug Walgren.

the biggest campaign issue for santorum was that Walgren LIVED IN VA.

LOL

16. He also didn't respond to a letter sent to him for jury duty.
Don't have the link but I remember him saying off handedly that if he could set up his schedule to coincide with the court he would gladly go.He is so busy you see. Is it a policy that anyone can set their own schedule when they want to be on a jury. So irresponsible.

17. Now School is offering Free Education to his kids
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04324/414263.stm

Five of U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's children will no longer attend a cyber charter school at the expense of the Penn Hills School District, but the cyber school's teachers have offered to donate their services so the children's education is uninterrupted.

<snip>

The children were home-schooled before signing up for the cyber school, submitting the required materials to the Penn Hills School District. In an interview with KDKA Radio yesterday morning, Santorum said the home-schooling "probably'' saved the district $80,000 to $90,000.

<snip>

While it varies by district and year, Penn Hills must pay $7,551 this year for each regular student and more for special education students. If the Santorum students are in regular education, the total for four school years amounts to $104,768, but $11,326 may be reimbursed by the state.

<snip>

"I'm going to do what's best for my family. If people don't like it, then they have an opportunity in a couple of years to show their displeasure,'' he said.

to get rid of these fanatical RW scum.

Repubs simply DO NOT CARE about huge financial scandals and thievery - hell, it's practically part of their platform.

Unless it is sex, sex, or sex (their obsession), they can steal the whole country blind (remember the Savings & Loan Scandal? - biggest American thievery ever!) and their voting consituents are nothing but proud of how they screw the public trust into oblivion.
