NEEDED: Statistics on Child Poverty, Homelessness, Health Care, etc.
Does anyone know of a "one-stop shopping" place where I can find up-to-date statistics on things like the subjects above? PARTICULARLY as they relate to children?

2. Needed a long time now:Statistical Almanac for Dems
with the item you mentioned. Now, stats are scattered in hundreds of sites, and academic journals. Journals that few read.

8. Do You Have Any Links to Sources You Used?
For the statistics? The statistics themselves are wonderful (for my purposes, not as a practical matter), I just need to know where they came from.

5. Why I Need It
I intend to rebut a letter to the editor in today's newspaper going on about the "Morality" issue and how it got Bush elected because the Republicans are the moral party and the Democrats are immoral. I intend to put the lie to that little myth.

A little girl standing outside in the cold wearing a dirty coat a size to small, sick for a month and a half without health insurance, living in a 1986 Grand Marquis with no engine, surviving on one meal a day and her tummy hurts so bad she cries herself to sleep.

What would Jesus do?

Fucking ban gay marriage? Go fuck your morality, fundies.

Disclaimer: My actual language in the LTTE may vary slightly.

6. Instead of writing a useless letter,
why don't you go out and help her. Better yet, join a soup kitchen as a volunteer. Donate your time, money and resources to help people like that little girl. Saying F#$% the fundies does nothing to further the cause of helping the homeless.

7. There's Useless and Then There's USELESS
Edited on Mon Nov-15-04 03:46 PM by GiovanniC
A letter pointing out the moral positions that Democrats believe in as opposed to the faux-moral positions that Republicans are shoving down the public's throat is not useless if it can open up some eyes.

Additionally, you have absolutely no idea how much I do to help children in my community so you can also suck my nuts.

PS: Your name suits you.

4. UPenn Study: US Ranks 27th in World Social Progress, Health, etc.
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2003-07/uop-ur2071703.php
(UPenn Study: US Ranks 27th in World Social Progress)

>snip<

In the U.S., Estes, who has researched world social development for 30 years, found the pace of social development to be "on hold" since 1980, putting the U.S. on the same level as Poland and Slovenia in the current "report card."

"Chronic poverty is the greatest threat to social progress in the United States," Estes said. "More than 33 million Americans -- almost 12 million of them children -- are poor." "Contrary to public perception," Estes said, "the majority of poor in the United States are members of established family households who work full-time and are white. No other economically advanced country tolerates such a level of poverty."

Other challenges impeding American social progress include slow economic growth, increasing unemployment, insecure access for many people to adequate health care and deteriorating schools in many urban areas.
