Texas Grandmother (Scott McClellan's mom) Eyes Governor's Race
AUSTIN, Texas - Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn's reputation as a watchdog for the health and education of children is summed up in a needlepoint decoration in her office: "One Ticked Off Grandma." Strayhorn may try to add another job to her resume — governor.

"People are very directly asking me to run for governor, and I'm listening," said the 64-year-old Strayhorn, who regularly takes aim at Gov. Rick Perry, a fellow Republican.

Strayhorn's attacks on Perry and his policies — including state cuts to health care and the failure to devise a new method for funding public schools — routinely make headlines. She has accused Perry of being behind the Texas Legislature's efforts to strip her state agency of some of its high-profile duties.

Said Kathy Walt, a spokeswoman for Perry: "Her paranoia is amazing."
..............
Her son Scott McClellan is White House spokesman, and another son, Dr. Mark McClellan, is administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Twins Dudley and Brad are lawyers.

1. Then There's Donnie EVANS, Shrub's Pal
OLBERMANN had a great line when he was discussing EVANS's resignation as Commerce Secty: "Just what does Commerce Secretary do? A clue would be that on Election eve he had TIME to be here on this show as a guest, so... "

Wasn't Donnie in a plane with Shrub almost crashing and killing them both?

JUST ASKING? Secretary of Commerce Donald L. Evans, who has resigned from the Bush administration — isn't he going home to Texas to make plans to run for governor, and won't he practically be a shoo-in, what with his good friend President Bush behind him all the way?

3. Jeez, the Tx Gov race is going to be interesting in 06
- Carole Keeton Banananrama Strayhorn Whamalamadingdong Rylander (Oops, she dropped the Rylander, didn't she? )
- Kay Bailey Hutchinson
- Governor Goodhair - he'll probably not even bother to run with those two in the race
And
- Kinky Friedman as an independent.

Phoooo....

6. I stole the other two from Molly Ivins. :)
I'm not original enough, I'm afraid. ;)

An interesting observation from Ms. Ivins

"On the Cheerleader Conspiracy front, please note that both of the governor's possible opponents in next year's primary -- Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and Comptroller Carole Keaton Strayhorn -- were cheerleaders, as was Goodhair himself. As was the president. Are we in the Twilight Zone yet? Has anyone seen the Spirit Stick?"

5. All She Needs Is to Add a Hispanic Name to Her List of Surnames
Geez, the Dem candidate (flame away on Tony SANCHEZ) spent $30 million of his own money and was one of the Shrub mob in a previous life AND he sported an Hispanic surname for rousing Hispanic voters and he STILL couldn't break the Repuke stranglehold.

The radio dude asked GOODHAIR, "My staff wants me to ask you one question: What did you ever DO to Carole (McCLELLAN) STRAYHORN?" GOODHAIR just laughed and laughed. Later a Dem state Representative was on and said, "We Dems have just stood by, like, we didn't have do DO anything, just watch these two go at each other like the WWF."

It comes down to Ms STRAYHORN is running against GOODHAIR. It is thought she might add to her surnames (KEETON-McCLELLAN-RYLANDER-STRAYHORN) to appeal to the Hispanic vote by adding MARTINEZ-LOPEZ-BUSTAMANTE.

.... Like most families, McClellan’s has its glories and its embarrassments. His mother, Carole Keeton Strayhorn, who is divorced from his father, is a colorful and powerful political figure in Texas, where she serves as the state’s comptroller. Before that, she was the mayor of Austin. Her longtime political alliance with the Bushes undoubtedly helped her son land a job as the spokesman for George W. when he was governor of Texas. McClellan’s brother Mark is the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, in Washington. McClellan’s father, Barr, a writer and business consultant now living in Gulfport, Mississippi, also has an abiding interest in Texas politics, as well as a flair for producing mystery dramas at local theatres. Now the senior McClellan appears to have combined these talents by writing an ostensibly nonfiction book titled “Blood, Money & Power: How L.B.J. Killed J.F.K.,” which will be published later this month. ....

Dean Keeton McClellan Rylander Strayhorn Blvd.
Now that Carole Keeton McClellan Rylander Strayhorn has remarried (again), do you suppose they'll rename 26th Street to match?

.... technically the street is named after her father, former Dean of the UT Law School. But I've always figured it was really named in tribute to Carole K.M.R.S. and if she weren't a powerful politician, UT and the city could've found somebody else to name it after.

7. Well, I haven't made up my mind yet,
but I may have to vote in the Rethuglican primary in 06 just to weigh in on this. Guess it depends on who the D's run. I have to admit, Kay Bailey strikes me as more sane than ol' Carole, although my opinion is based on very little actual fact. Anyone care to enlighten me?
