Is Bush proposing to cut SS for people who are already senior citizens? It seems to me that Boomers have more to worry about. For generation X and Y, Bush's plan may be a wash.

Don't know about that
According to what I read, if Bush's privatization goes through (and how could it possibly fail to go through?), the fund for current retirees will have a 2 trillion shortfall. Now, I don't know what's in the fund currently, but a shortfall is still a shortfall.

18. I don't think it's the current seniors who will be affected. I think its
us middle-agers who will be screwed. I'm 49 and my husband is 54. We've been paying into SS for 35 years and are so close. Will it be there in 15 years for us? I doubt it. And it's really, really sad. All in order to keep the billionares status quo. God, do I hate *!

32. Agreed, middle agers will get hit the most.
If (or more likely when) it happens the young will have longer to plan and the elderly will hopefully not see a change. It's those of us in the middle who are too close to save substantially more that will get screwed.

20. The young have more to lose.
By calling SS a retirement fund they've already screwed you. It is an insurance policy also. Widows and orphans collect from this fund as well as disabled workers. It's another fraud like the MSAs. You are going to be betting that you accumulate enough funds to carry you through before a disaster hits. Typical GOP ploy plays on greed. Hoping to get yours and screw the less fortunate=values.

As I understand it, the privatization plan will leave the fund for current retirees' with a 2 trillion dollar shortfall.

28. they won't make outright cuts to SS
they have already upped the premiums to Medicare over the past four years at the rate of 54%. That money is deducted from your SS check.

The majority of the people depending solely on SS, are poor elderly women.

If there is a catastrophic illness or accident requiring a lot of medical intervention, there will be lots of bills to pay that Medicare will not pay. If one cannot make those bills, and is forced to go on Medicaid, one's house and property will be confiscated in order to pay for those bills.

No matter what it means, no matter if it keeps you independant and out of nursing homes, no matter if you have lived in it for fifty years.

That is justice.

I sense a perception that the young resent paying for the elderly-as if there is a direct hand over of their money to us and we do not deserve it because we get sick too much. We live in houses that they cannot now afford to buy. We are retired and worryless about striving to make it in today's world (although many seniors are forced to go back to work) After all, we have had the good fortune to have lived in what I think is the best years ever to live in this country before it started downhill and dammit that is just not fair.

FUCK 'em all. When their SS, Medicare and veteran's benefits dry up, I will happily remind them if their vote and right now I don't give a shit what happens to them. Let them live on faith.

48. That is possible.
There are some who theorize that is what happened to Hitler after his mother died. He blamed his Mother's physician which led to his advocating persecution. I always thought that was a poor excuse for mass murder of millions.

There are a lot of people who are generally angry, some behaviorist call this "setting events". Some events are more lasting than others.

How can Bush expect to cover the transition cost of 2 Trillion dollars? We've already reached our credit limit! The country will go bankrupt - hopefully, there are enough fiscal conservatives in Congress to thwart the plan.

38. I know elderly people who are very worried about Bush
and their SS and their grandchildren and the draft and Iraq. Not everyone of a certain age group, even in Red states voted for him. If you were in your 70s or 80s and left to the mercy of the system and you watched as Bush stole another election and started talking about the privatization of Social Security; you'd be upset.

Elderly people are stunned by what is going on in our country, and some even voted early to make sure they got their vote in, in case they died or became ill before election day. This was a big deal to many folks. A very big deal.

Keep yelling voter fraud and yell it louder for those who are unable to raise their voices.
