Moving our party toward the center does NOT work

Dean was on the right path. People only wake up when they're jarred. This nation needs to undergo an epiphany. People don't experience such a thing gradually. Something BIG opens their eyes in an immediate way. The right moves further and further in that direction, and it works for them. Why don't we do the same thing (or, more accurately, the opposite?) Thoughts?
